The Dallas Mavericks played out the final game of Moses Brown’s 10-day contract in Saturday’s 132-117 loss against the Milwaukee Bucks, requiring them to find another solution to their temporary center concerns.
Sources confirm to DallasHoopsJournal.com that Kai Jones, recently released by the LA Clippers, will sign a two-way deal with the Mavericks once he clears waivers. Dallas intends to waive Kylor Kelley to free up a two-way contract to sign Jones.
Jones, a 24-year-old center, appeared in 28 games for the Clippers this season but was limited to an average of just 7.4 minutes per game. During this time, he posted averages of 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds. His playing time had been reduced significantly, with Jones only seeing action once during February and not playing more than three minutes in a game since January 15.
The addition of Jones could provide valuable size and depth for a Dallas team navigating many frontcourt injuries. Anthony Davis, who suffered an adductor strain in his debut for the Mavericks, is scheduled for reevaluation on March 6. Daniel Gafford, who has a Grade 3 MCL sprain, and Dereck Lively II, who has a fractured ankle, are both set for further evaluation on the same date. However, there remains a lack of clarity regarding a potential return timetable.
Meanwhile, Moses Brown has been the Mavericks’ starting center for the last two games. However, his 10-day contract ends tonight, and due to hard cap limitations, Dallas can’t sign him again until April 10. This opens a potential chance for Jones to make an immediate impact.
Although his NBA career has been underwhelming to date, Jones was viewed as an intriguing prospect after college. He was chosen as the 19th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. His ability to impact offense and defense could greatly benefit the Mavericks, who are working hard to stay competitive with their main big men, who are currently unavailable.
Brandon Williams, Kessler Edwards, and Kelley currently fill the two-way slots in Dallas. To accommodate Jones before the March 4 deadline for signing two-way players, the Mavericks had to waive Kelley, making space for this addition. Due to being hard-capped by the First Apron, the Mavericks cannot sign a player to their 15th roster spot until four days before the end of the regular season.
