The Golden State Warriors have “cautious optimism” that Stephen Curry can return by month’s end as he rehabs a knee injury, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Curry is dealing with runner’s knee in his right knee. He hasn’t played since January 30.
“This is a weird one,” Curry told ESPN’s Malika Andrews during an in-game interview against the Los Angeles Lakers on February 28. “It’s kind of unpredictable how it’ll heal. It’s going to be a little longer. Right now, with this one, it’s about each day, can you stack good days? I’ve done that. Hopefully they can unleash me on the court soon and hopefully get back sooner than later.”
Curry has played in 39 games this season. He’s averaging 27.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 46.8% from the field, 39.1% from beyond the arc and 93.1% from the free-throw line.
The Warriors are in ninth place in the Western Conference standings. If the regular season ended today, Golden State would be in the NBA play-in tournament.
The Dubs won the 2022 championship against the Boston Celtics in six games. They haven’t advanced past the second round of the playoffs since Curry’s fourth NBA championship.
“Trying to stay in shape, strengthen everything else around the body, knowing at this stage, once you get back, it’s a full sprint to the playoffs,” Curry said. “Once I get back on the court, it’s a little bit of a pain tolerance thing. But it’s just something you don’t want lingering because it can get worse.”
Golden State traded Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks for Kristaps Porzingis at this year’s NBA trade deadline. All-Star forward Jimmy Butler will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL and Porzingis has played just five games with the Warriors, who are not championship contenders.
Curry has spent his entire NBA career with the Warriors. He’s a two-time MVP and one-time Finals MVP.
The NBA’s all-time leader in 3s, Curry holds career averages of 24.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. He turned 38 on March 14 and has one year left on his contract after this season.
