‘I Miss Klay’: Steve Kerr Wishes Klay Thompson Still Played For Golden State Warriors

Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson faced the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day at the Chase Center. It was his fifth game against the team he won four NBA championships with.
Thompson scored only seven points in his fifth reunion game as the Mavericks lost to the Warriors, 126-116. After the game, Thompson’s former coach, Steve Kerr, said he wished the sharpshooter still played for Golden State.
“I’ll never get used to seeing Klay on the other side,” Kerr said. “I miss Klay. I wish he was still here.”
Thompson left the Warriors for the Mavericks in the offseason of 2024. His relationship with the front office, particularly owner Joe Lacob, soured too much, so much so that Thompson told Stephen Curry not to tell Lacob to offer him more money to come back.
That’s how much Thompson wanted to leave the Warriors.
“They are an opponent,” Klay Thompson said. “Why would I look at any other team other than the Mavericks like that? It’s just the nature of the business.”
Thompson is making $16.7 million this season. He’ll make $17.5 million next season in the final year of his contract.
The Mavericks, who are in 11th place in the Western Conference standings, are exploring the trade markets for Thompson, Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell and Daniel Gafford, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.
One of the greatest shooters in NBA history, Thompson has appeared in 29 games for the Mavericks this season. The veteran is averaging 11.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 36.9% from the field, 35.1% from beyond the arc and 71.4% from the free-throw line.
A future Hall of Famer, Thompson is averaging 13.1 points per game while shooting 37.9% from 3 in a Mavericks uniform. Dallas missed the playoffs last season after making the 2024 NBA Finals.
Thompson signed with the Mavericks to play with Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić. Dallas traded Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last season for Davis.
The 35-year-old Thompson doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract. The five-time All-Star, who turns 36 in February, scored a season-high 23 points against the Los Angeles Clippers on November 29.
