Steve Kerr Won’t Leave Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors For Another NBA Coaching Job: ‘That’s Not Happening’
Steve Kerr told Anthony Slater of ESPN that he will not leave Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors for another NBA coaching job.
Kerr made headlines recently when he said he wouldn’t seek a contract extension beyond this season.
“Management and ownership would have to want it to continue,” Steve Kerr said. “I would have to want it to continue. Steph would have to. I’m not finishing my contract and saying, ‘Alright, I think I’ll go leave for such and such job around the league somewhere.’ That’s not happening.”
The Warriors hired Kerr in 2014. They have reached the NBA Finals six times.
Golden State won the championship in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022. The franchise went 73-9 during the 2015-16 season, breaking the Chicago Bulls’ 1995-96 record of 72-10.
Curry has won two MVPs and one Finals MVP under Kerr.
When asked by Slater if he could play for another coach other than Kerr, Curry said, “I don’t want to. We deserve that, I feel. Things change in this league. We can only control so much. But I think we’re in a very unique situation that we deserve the opportunity [to ride it out].”
Curry is 37 years old. He turns 38 on March 14, 2026. The future Hall of Famer will make $59.6 million this season and $62.6 million next season. He becomes an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027.
“He’s the only coach I’ve known to write handwritten letters,” Stephen Curry said. “It’s when s—‘s really going on. It’s not for everybody because people show love and appreciation in different ways. But I do appreciate it because it gives you somebody’s true thoughts and perspectives. It’s a lost art.”
The Warriors beat the Houston Rockets in the first round of the 2025 playoffs in seven games but lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round in five games. Curry suffered a left hamstring injury in Game 1 against the Timberwolves and missed the rest of the series.
