Sources: Max Hooper Set to Become Next Head Coach of Texas Legends

Max Hooper is set to become the next head coach of the Texas Legends, the NBA G League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks, a person with knowledge of the decision confirmed to DallasHoopsJournal.com.

Hooper has been part of the Mavericks organization since the 2021-22 season, when he joined the staff as an assistant video coordinator. He held that position for two seasons before being promoted to head video coordinator in 2023, a role he has held for the past two years. His upcoming move to lead the Legends marks the next step in a rising coaching path rooted in scouting, film analysis, and player development.

Before joining the Mavericks, Hooper worked as a coaching associate with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2019 to 2021, including during their 2020 championship season. He joined Dallas when Jason Kidd was hired as head coach ahead of the 2021-22 campaign, continuing a professional relationship that dates back to their time in Los Angeles.

The promotion comes amid ongoing changes to the Mavericks’ coaching structure. Jordan Sears, who served as head coach of the Legends last season, is expected to rejoin Kidd’s staff in Dallas. The Mavericks also recently added Jay Triano as an experienced top assistant, replacing Alex Jensen, who departed to become the head coach of the University of Utah.

Hooper’s experience as head video coordinator placed him at the center of game preparation, opponent scouting, and in-depth strategy work. The role, often seen as a springboard for future coaching opportunities, requires fluency in league trends, personnel analysis, and communication with both players and staff.

Though still early in his coaching career, Hooper’s ascent from the video room to the G League sidelines reflects a growing reputation for his work ethic, basketball intelligence, and leadership presence. He will now take on the challenge of overseeing a Legends roster comprised of young players on two-way contracts, G League regulars, and prospects aiming to reach the NBA level.

Hooper will begin his tenure as head coach ahead of the 2025-26 G League season. His appointment reinforces the Mavericks’ continued investment in internal development and the alignment between their NBA and G League programs.
