During an interview with Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Golden State Warriors legend Andre Iguodala said he would like to see LeBron James play with Stephen Curry next season.
James is an unrestricted free agent right now and the Warriors are one of the teams he’s been heavily linked to.
“Considering where they’re at in their careers, what they did in Paris,” Iguodala said. “In my opinion, LeBron James, he might be the smartest basketball player I’ve ever seen. … For him to play with somebody like Steph Curry …
“To see that, even to fathom it, that’s what drives interest and drives the love of the game, of basketball, is the greatness of our players. So, I’m going to be watching. Every game.”
James is close friends with Curry and Draymond Green. James and Green have the same agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr coached James on Team USA in the summer of 2024.
Curry was on that team as well, which won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Most people around the NBA believe James will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third and final stint to close out his legendary basketball career at home, but until the NBA’s all-time leading scorer puts pen to paper, Curry and the Warriors still have a chance.
Curry and James have combined to win six MVPs, eight championships and five Finals MVPs. Curry is the best shooter of all time, while James is the greatest all-around player in NBA history. The two sports icons played well off each other in the Paris Olympics and the Warriors could contend for the championship next season with James, Curry and Green leading the way.
It will be intriguing to see where James is playing next season. The Warriors missed the playoffs last season, which is why they desperately need James to join them.
“He’s very much so deserving of it, and it’s the opportunity or even the thought of it. You can just feel the excitement from the fans,” Iguodala said of James’ free agency frenzy. “One thing I’ve learned in this tenure and working with the league and [commissioner] Adam [Silver], it’s we got to do a better job of driving the positive narratives and the positive narrative is that he’s [still] playing. Considering every time he wakes up, he’s pissing somebody off because he’ll drink red Gatorade as opposed to blue. I think it’s just a great moment for the game.
“It’s just showing our appeal globally when the athlete of our generation, the best player of our generation, is still commanding this level of attention and respect and curiosity. All of those things go into that. And so, the opportunity could be amazing. We all tune in, regardless if we like it or not.”
Curry and James have talked in the last week about playing together, according to Anthony Slater of ESPN. James, 41, is expected to sign with the Warriors, Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers or Minnesota Timberwolves.
