Arike Ogunbowale’s Dynamic Night Comes Up Short
Arike Ogunbowale scored a season-high 37 points in Thursday’s loss, tying the WNBA’s highest single-game scoring total this season and matching Tina Charles for eighth all-time with her 23rd career 30-point game. She added seven assists and five rebounds, hitting six 3-pointers to tie Kelsey Plum for 18th on the league’s all-time made 3s list (512).
“It looked like our chemistry took a little step,” Ogunbowale said postgame. “But it’s still not where we want it to be.”
Before her injury, Paige Bueckers had become a stabilizing force for Dallas. She logged 15 points, eight assists, five rebounds, three steals, and a career-high three blocks Thursday in one of her most complete performances to date. She reached 40 career assists faster than any WNBA player in over a decade.
Paige Bueckers and Tyasha Harris Both Out
The Wings announced Friday that Bueckers would miss at least two games while in concussion protocol after a late collision in Thursday’s game. Tyasha Harris, who was initially listed as questionable with a left knee injury, was officially downgraded to out for Saturday’s rematch.
Without either of their primary ballhandlers, the Wings may opt to slide Ogunbowale into more of a lead guard role while increasing minutes for Maddy Siegrist and DiJonai Carrington. Rookie guards JJ Quinerly and Aziaha James are also expected to take on larger responsibilities.
“You’ve got to move without the ball, cut hard, and be in the right spots,” Siegrist told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “When Arike is going downhill, we just have to read off her and stay connected. Everyone’s job gets a little bigger.”
Teaira McCowan echoed the need for urgency, especially playing through Ogunbowale.
“When Paige is out, it’s just about moving with purpose and letting Arike do what she does,” McCowan told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “She’s going to draw attention, so we’ve got to stay ready. Be active, crash, space—it all matters more.”
Dallas Wings Backcourt Options
James or Quinerly becomes an option for more minutes in Dallas’ reconfigured backcourt. James did not appear on Thursday but recently scored nine points in nine minutes against Connecticut. Quinerly saw limited time in Chicago but is known for her defensive pressure and composure.
“They show that they’re ready every practice, every game,” Luisa Geiselsöder told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “They’re really talented rookies. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be here.”
“JJ—you can always count on her. Her defense is crazy. It’s really good,” she added. “She’s just another threat. So we have two threats from the guard position that are coming out, and they’re excited and motivated every game.”
Sky head coach Tyler Marsh acknowledged Dallas’ depth despite Bueckers’ absence.
“Paige is a great player, but they still have a lot of other options,” Marsh told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “DiJonai is going to look to step up, and Arike is still Arike. They’ve still got posts inside who can do some damage, and a good bench as well. So believe me—they’re still a very capable team, with or without Paige.”
Inside the First Matchup Against Chicago Sky
Dallas trailed by 10 after the first quarter but mounted a furious comeback after halftime. Ogunbowale and Bueckers combined for 52 points and 15 assists, including 23 points in the third quarter alone. Carrington added 15 points, while McCowan grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in 21 minutes.
McCowan made a significant impact off the bench, playing a key role in neutralizing Kamilla Cardoso’s interior dominance. Her matchup was one of the rare occasions she wasn’t the largest post presence on the floor.
“I mean, honestly, I do [enjoy those matchups],” McCowan said. “It’s just a little back and forth — we get down there and see who can bang out the best. That’s boss basketball, right? I like the low-post presence game.”
Cardoso led Chicago with a season-high 23 points and eight rebounds. Vandersloot scored 13 points and dished out nine assists, becoming the Sky’s all-time leading scorer and leader in made field goals.
Angel Reese added nine rebounds, five assists, and timely defense during the fourth-quarter swing. Dallas shot a season-high 51.4% from the field but committed 16 turnovers and was out-rebounded 34–30.
“We just struggled to get stops,” Koclanes told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “But I’m encouraged by our play tonight on that side of the ball.”
What Comes Next for Dallas Wings
After facing the Sky, the Wings will travel to face the Seattle Storm at Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday, June 3. There remain questions about the injury report, especially with Bueckers already ruled out and Harris uncertain going forward.
“It doesn’t feel great,” Koclanes said. “But we get to see [Chicago] again very quickly — now we get to watch and adjust. It’s about how we respond.”
