LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers Haven’t Had Much Communication This Offseason

DHJ Quick Take: Lakers And LeBron Facing Offseason Radio Silence

  • Communication Breakdown: The Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James have had remarkably little communication so far this offseason, casting early uncertainty over their future together.
  • Unprecedented Free Agency: At 41 years old, James is an unrestricted free agent, marking the first time he has hit the open market completely untethered to a team since he left Cleveland for Los Angeles in 2018.
  • Potential Landing Spots: If the NBA’s all-time leading scorer decides to walk away from the Lakers, early league rumors have heavily linked him to potential stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers or Golden State Warriors.

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers haven’t had much communication this offseason, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

James, 41, is an unrestricted free agent for the first time since the summer of 2018.

“There was a check-in call made to my understanding early in free agency once teams were able to start negotiating with their own free agents after the end of the NBA Finals,” Charania said on NBA Today (via RealGM.com). “Since then, though, there hasn’t been much communication from my understanding between the Lakers and LeBron James’ side and certainly not an offer yet. They’re trying to see what can they do with his $50 million of space potentially.”

James has been with the Lakers since the 2018-19 season. He led the franchise to the 2020 championship at the Walt Disney World bubble and won his fourth title and fourth Finals MVP.

LAL also made the Western Conference Finals in 2023 but lost to the Denver Nuggets in four games.

Lakers superstar Luka Dončić, the new franchise player for the Purple and Gold, missed the entire 2026 playoffs because of a serious hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves — who intends to re-sign with the Lakers on a four-year, $185 million contract — missed Games 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Lakers-Houston Rockets first-round series due to an oblique strain.

LAL beat Houston in six games behind the stellar play of James, who averaged 23.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game in the six-game series.

Arguably the greatest player in NBA history, James played in 60 games this past season, his 23rd year in the NBA. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game.

In the 2026 playoffs against the Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder, James put up 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game. The Lakers got swept by the Thunder in the second round. It was the first time James lost in the second round of the playoffs since 2010.

James, who has been in the NBA since 2003, is a four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP. He’s played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice), Miami Heat and Lakers and is the all-time leader in points, field goals, minutes and games.

James’ son, Bronny James, is on the Lakers. It would be pretty stunning to see LeBron leave his son if he doesn’t retire from the NBA this summer.

However, if the Lakers don’t give LeBron a satisfactory offer, the NBA legend could depart. He’s been linked to the Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.

LAL could sign-and-trade LeBron and include Bronny in the trade to officially start the Dončić-Reaves era.

James has a close relationship with Dončić, Reaves and Lakers head coach JJ Redick. However, LeBron’s relationship with Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka is not that strong anymore. As a result, LeBron returning to LAL isn’t set in stone.

A 22-time All-Star, LeBron holds career averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game in the regular season and 28.2 points, 8.9 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game in the playoffs.
