DHJ Quick Take: Wings Open Three-Game Road Trip Facing Transition Test in Chicago
- Start of First Multi-Game Road Trip: The Dallas Wings open a three-game road stretch Wednesday night against the Chicago Sky, hunting for their first regular-season win over Chicago since 2024 and their first road victory at Wintrust Arena since August 2, 2022.
- Siegrist Outlines Ball-Movement Blueprint: Forward Maddy Siegrist emphasized that sustaining the heavy ball movement from Monday’s 30-assist performance is critical to matching Chicago’s transition pace, calling for strict communication to mirror their early-season rebounding standard.
- Ogunbowale Demands Defensive Execution: Veteran guard Arike Ogunbowale identified perimeter defense as the game’s non-negotiable, highlighting the need to match a revamped, physical Sky backcourt featuring high-profile veteran additions Skylar Diggins and Natasha Cloud.
- Fudd Gains Rookie Momentum: No. 1 overall pick Azzi Fudd enters the matchup shooting an efficient 61.1% from the floor. Ogunbowale praised Fudd’s maturity in filtering out external noise, noting her developmental stride is heavily supported by multi-time WNBA champion Alysha Clark.
- Bueckers and Shepard Track Elite League Benchmarks: Through the opening stretch of the 2026 season, Paige Bueckers remains the lone WNBA player averaging 20+ points and 5+ assists on a 50/50 shooting split, while frontcourt anchor Jessica Shepard ranks fifth leaguewide in rebounding at 9.8 boards per game.
CHICAGO — The Dallas Wings (2-2) open a three-game road trip on Wednesday night against the Chicago Sky (3-1) at Wintrust Arena, with tip-off set for 8 p.m. CT on USA Network.
Dallas enters the matchup riding the momentum of a 92-69 home rout of the Washington Mystics on Monday in front of a sold-out crowd, a game in which five players scored in double figures and the Wings set season-highs in assists (30), bench points (43), steals (10), offensive rebounds (11), third-quarter points (28) and second-half points (54).
Paige Bueckers led the way with 18 points, three rebounds and a team-high seven assists, while Jessica Shepard delivered her first double-double of the season with 12 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists. Shepard’s rebounding total tied Angel Reese for the most in a single game leaguewide this season, and she became just one of six players in WNBA history to record a stat line of at least 12 points, 16 rebounds, six assists, and zero turnovers.
Maddy Siegrist Says Ball Movement Is Central to Dallas Wings’ Approach
Maddy Siegrist pointed to Chicago’s transition pace and frontcourt talent as the primary concerns heading into Wednesday’s matchup.
“They play extremely fast in transition, so we’ve got to make sure we get back,” Siegrist told Dallas Hoops Journal. “They have a lot of talent, so we’ve got to make sure we try to contain their players as best we can.”
Siegrist sees the offensive blueprint from Monday’s win as the template moving forward, particularly the team’s willingness to share the ball.
“Just keep moving the ball, keep sharing the ball,” Siegrist told Dallas Hoops Journal. “I think good things happen when we share the ball and get out and run.”
Dallas held Washington to just nine points in the first quarter on Monday, tied for the fewest allowed in a single quarter by any team this season. For Siegrist, the recipe to replicate that defensive effort starts with communication and rebounding.
“I think just communication. I think we did a great job of communicating last game,” Siegrist told Dallas Hoops Journal. “Then make it one and done. We’ve got to own the boards again tonight.”
With the early-season schedule beginning to space out, Siegrist said the two practices ahead of Monday’s game proved valuable for a group still finding its rhythm.
“Yeah, definitely. I think everyone knows practice time is something you can’t take for granted, so you’ve got to get better every day when we’re there,” Siegrist told Dallas Hoops Journal.
Arike Ogunbowale Stresses Defense, Narrow Focus for Road Trip
Arike Ogunbowale identified defense as the non-negotiable element for Wednesday’s matchup, particularly against a Sky roster loaded with backcourt talent and physical frontcourt presence.
“Defense. I think that’s the key for every game. Staying up in them,” Ogunbowale told Dallas Hoops Journal. “They have some good guards. They have some physical posts, shot-blocking posts. So defense for sure, getting up in their guards, and then just executing, sharing the ball.”
Ogunbowale also praised Siegrist’s consistency, calling her a player who delivers regardless of the spotlight.
“Yeah, she’s really consistent. She comes in and does what she needs to do,” Ogunbowale told Dallas Hoops Journal. “Stays aggressive, looks for her shot, does the little things for us.”
With three road games ahead, Ogunbowale said the team’s focus has to remain narrow.
“Taking it game by game. Obviously, it’s a three-game road trip, but the most important game is the game in front of us, so just focus on Chicago and what we can do to win here,” Ogunbowale told Dallas Hoops Journal.
Paige Bueckers, Jessica Shepard Headline Dallas Wings’ Early-Season Statistical Leaders
Through games played as of May 18, Bueckers is tied for eighth across the WNBA in scoring at 20.0 points per game and assists at 5.5 per game, while ranking fourth in three-point percentage at 62.5%. She is the only player in the league averaging 20+ points and 5+ assists while shooting 50+% from the field and 50+% from three-point range.
Bueckers’ 18-point performance Monday pushed her career total to 772 points through 40 career games, the fifth-most through the first 40 games of a career in WNBA history. She trails only Cynthia Cooper (915), Seimone Augustus (879), A’ja Wilson (776), and Cappie Pondexter (774).
Shepard ranks fifth in the WNBA in rebounding at 9.8 per game and is tied for eighth in assists at 5.5 per game. Her 16-rebound performance Monday marked the 20th double-double of her career and made her just the sixth Wings player since the franchise moved to North Texas in 2016 to record 16+ rebounds in a regular season game.
Ogunbowale, meanwhile, is tied with DeWanna Bonner for the WNBA lead in fast break points per game at 4.3.
Azzi Fudd Builds Momentum in Rookie Season
Azzi Fudd, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft, posted a season-high 12 points along with two rebounds and three assists on 6-of-9 shooting in Monday’s win. Through three games, Fudd is shooting 61.1% from the field, which ranks third among all WNBA rookies.
Much of the early-season attention has centered on Fudd, who has taken on a featured role from the jump. Ogunbowale, who experienced her own high-profile transition from college to the WNBA, said the rookie has handled the spotlight with maturity.
“Yeah, she keeps the outside noise outside. She knows what an asset she is to this team and how much we need her,” Ogunbowale said. “She’s finding her spots to be aggressive and taking it day by day. She’s a rookie, it’s a lot on her, but she’s taking it well.”
The mentorship between Ogunbowale and Fudd has developed organically, with the veteran guard noting Fudd’s receptiveness.
“Yeah, it’s been good. Azzi is super receptive to everything,” Ogunbowale said. “She’s always asking questions, trying to learn, trying to be better, and she’s gonna be really good in this league.”
Fudd has also leaned on veteran Alysha Clark for skill work and guidance, a relationship Ogunbowale described as invaluable. At practices and shootarounds, it’s common to see Fudd and Clark going through shooting drills together, as they did at Wintrust Arena before facing the Sky.
“Yeah, Alysha is a super vet. She’s been around and been in all different positions where she’s been a starter, played a lot of minutes, come off the bench, maybe hasn’t played at all,” Ogunbowale told Dallas Hoops Journal. “She knows everything, so that’s just a great mentor to all of us, honestly. She’s won championships. She knows what it takes, so just having her, and Azzi having her as a rookie, is definitely special.”
Chicago Sky Bring Revamped Roster, Gabriella Jacquez’s Breakout to Wintrust Arena
Chicago enters Wednesday’s contest off an 86-79 road win over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, in which 2026 No. 5 overall pick Gabriella Jacquez poured in 20 points to go with eight rebounds, one assist and one steal.
The Sky’s 2026 roster features significant turnover, headlined by the additions of seven-time WNBA All-Star Skylar Diggins, 2024 WNBA Most Improved Player DiJonai Carrington and veteran point guard Natasha Cloud. Head coach Tyler Marsh enters his second season at the helm with a 13-35 overall record.
Dallas is seeking its first regular season win over Chicago since May 15, 2024, and its first road win at Wintrust Arena since August 2, 2022. The Wings hold an 11-18 all-time record against the Sky on the road.
