The WNBA has fined one of Caitlin Clark‘s Indiana Fever teammates. Guard Sophie Cunningham announced on X that she was fined $500.
Why was Cunningham fined? Because she criticized refs in one of her TikTok posts.
Officiating has become a contentious issue in the WNBA this season, with many players and coaches criticizing referees for inconsistent calls.
“Everybody’s getting better except the officials,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said last month. “So we got to find a way to remedy it. I mean, you’ve heard every coach talk about it, so I don’t know what the answer is.”
The Fever are 12-12 on the season. They are third in the WNBA in points per game, seventh in points per game allowed, third in offensive rating, seventh in defensive rating and fifth in net rating.
In her first season with the Fever, Sophie Cunningham is averaging 7.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists while shooting 43.1% from the field, 40.0% from beyond the arc and 84.6% from the free-throw line. She spent the first six years of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury.
Caitlin Clark has appeared in 13 games this season. She’s averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.8 assists while shooting 36.7% from the field, 27.9% from beyond the arc and 82.0% from the free-throw line.
Clark, who hasn’t played since July 15 due to a right groin injury, underwent further medical evaluations earlier this week and no additional injuries or damage were discovered.
