Trading Anthony Davis Is Path Several NBA Execs, Scouts Believe Would Be Logical For Dallas Mavericks

After firing Nico Harrison, trading Anthony Davis is a path several NBA executives and scouts believe would be logical for the Dallas Mavericks, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
Davis is 32 years old. He is under contract for $54.1 million this season and $58.5 million for the 2026–27 season. The Chicago native has a player option for the 2027–28 season worth $62.8 million.
A future Hall of Famer, Davis is averaging 20.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.9 blocks per game with the Mavericks, who are 3-8 on the season.
Davis has appeared in just 14 games with Dallas since the blockbuster Luka Dončić trade last season. The big man is averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks per contest this season while shooting 52.0% from the field, 27.3% from beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free-throw line.
“You don’t go two timelines anymore,” a West executive told ESPN. “You say, ‘We’re going to take what we can get [for Davis].’ At this point, I’m not sure what they can get.”
Currently out with a left calf strain, Davis reported to training camp at 268 pounds, according to the roster the Mavericks released in September. That was 15 pounds heavier than what he was listed at the previous season with the Los Angeles Lakers.
A top 75 player of all time, Davis has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers and Mavericks. He has made 10 All-Star teams, five All-NBA teams and five All-Defensive teams.
“You have Cooper Flagg, but you’re old and you don’t own your picks,” a West decision-maker told ESPN. “[They have to] be comfortable with taking two steps back if that’s the necessary path. Be patient. They need to lose this year, but I don’t see Dumont being comfortable with taking a step back. It’s not natural as a new owner.”
