‘Just Shot It With Confidence’: Brandon Williams’ Belief Delivers Dallas Mavericks Game-Winner In Sacramento

Brandon Williams never hesitated when the moment found him. Not because the circumstances were easy, but because confidence has long been part of how he survives — and succeeds — in the NBA.
That confidence surfaced late Tuesday night, when Williams delivered the decisive shot in the Dallas Mavericks’ 100–98 road victory over the Sacramento Kings, snapping a seven-game road losing streak and opening a three-game trip with a much-needed win.
With 33.9 seconds remaining and Dallas trailing by one, Cooper Flagg drew the defense and kicked the ball to Williams on the right wing. Williams rose without pause and buried the three-pointer that ultimately held up as the game-winner.
Brandon Williams Leverages Trust In The Moment
In the aftermath, Williams framed the shot less as a defining career moment and more as the natural extension of trust built over time. For him, the possession never felt oversized; it felt familiar.
“Just a shot of confidence,” Williams said. “My teammates have full confidence in me. I kind of saw it in Cooper’s eyes before he passed it — he was going to get it off to me — so I just had to be ready to shoot.”
That readiness was not accidental. Even as recent three-point results lagged behind his standards, Williams said his preparation — and the accountability around him — remained consistent.
“Carlos is always on my percentage, telling me I’m always ready to shoot,” Williams said. “So I just stayed ready.”
From the bench and the floor, Anthony Davis saw the moment as a reflection of mindset rather than mechanics. The shot, in his view, carried weight precisely because of the context Williams had navigated leading into it.
“B-Will laced it up with confidence and made a three to put us up two,” Davis said. “I’m glad he was confident enough to shoot it, and that was a big shot for him. Those are the shots that lead to carryover shooting and carryover confidence for the rest of the season.”
Preparation Over Percentages
Williams finished with 18 points against Sacramento, providing timely offense in a game where Dallas erased a double-digit deficit by outscoring the Kings 54–40 after halftime. The comeback required patience, rebounding, and a willingness to keep attacking even as shots came and went.
Davis said moments like the game-winner are rooted in habits that rarely show up during games, pointing to Williams’ consistency behind the scenes.
“Even if he was lacking confidence, which we know that he doesn’t, plays like that … you find confidence in plays like that,” Davis said. “He shoots the ball extremely well in practice. It’s just about translating it to the game.”
Over the course of the season, Williams has averaged 11.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in 33 games, often stepping into expanded responsibility as injuries and rotation changes have reshaped Dallas’ backcourt.
Closing It Out for the Dallas Mavericks
Even as the shot splashed through the net, Williams said the sense of relief had to wait. Sacramento still had time, and the Mavericks still had work to do.
“Hell yeah, bro,” Williams said. “It’s been a minute since I hit a three, so it felt good just to see the ball go in. But there were still about 30 seconds left, so we had to finish the game out before I could really feel good.”
Dallas ultimately survived multiple missed three-point attempts in the closing seconds, sealing a win that required composure on both ends rather than a single play.
After the game, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd pointed to Williams’ confidence as emblematic of the mindset Dallas is trying to establish in close games, particularly given how many tight finishes the team has navigated this season.
Kidd said Williams’ impact extended beyond the final possession, noting how his control of the offense helped steady Dallas during key stretches.
“Yeah, I think when you look at Brandon, he’s not short on confidence,” Kidd said. “And he was a big reason for our win tonight. Not just that shot, but for our offense overall. He got us going.”
Kidd also highlighted the sequence itself, crediting both the read and the decisiveness required to execute under pressure.
“For him to be able to step up — great pass, great rhythm shot — and have the confidence to take that with the game on the line just shows the belief he has in his game,” Kidd said.
For a roster that has lived in tight finishes throughout the season, Kidd said those experiences accumulate, shaping how players respond when games tilt late.
“This is something we’ll look back on,” Kidd said. “We didn’t play our best, but we found a way to win a close, ugly game.”
Carrying Confidence Forward
While Davis spent much of the postgame discussion highlighting Williams’ poise, Williams repeatedly redirected attention toward Davis’ presence as the stabilizing force behind Dallas’ execution.
“He does everything for us,” Williams said. “He does a lot of the small stuff too, even if it doesn’t show up on the box score. If one of our defenders gets beat — even if he’s not blocking the shot — guys are second-guessing it just because he’s there.
“It’s Anthony Davis,” Williams added. “He’s one of the best two-way players ever. Just having him on the floor helps us in all types of ways.”
Davis finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds, anchoring the interior and helping Dallas withstand 17 turnovers on a night when efficiency was hard-earned.
Williams said the win — and the way it unfolded — carries meaning beyond a single night.
“It’s a good feeling,” Williams said. “It’s always a good feeling to win, especially on the road. It gives us a lot of confidence going into this trip we’re on right now.”
With injuries continuing to test Dallas’ depth, Williams’ role remains vital. The moment in Sacramento served as another reminder of what he brings when opportunity meets belief — readiness, trust, and the confidence to let it fly when the game demands it.
Dallas returns to action on Thursday against the Utah Jazz, continuing a three-game road trip.
