DHJ Quick Take
- Blocked Trade Attempt: The Cavaliers reached out to the Bucks before the 2026 trade deadline to discuss a blockbuster deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
- Cavaliers’ Deadline Pivot: After failing to land Antetokounmpo, Cleveland executed a “win-now” move by acquiring James Harden from the Clippers.
- Offseason Uncertainty: While Antetokounmpo remained with the Bucks through the deadline, the team’s disappointing 32–50 finish and recent coaching changes have fueled widespread expectations that they will explore a trade this offseason.
The Cleveland Cavaliers contacted the Milwaukee Bucks about a blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo trade before the 2026 NBA trade deadline, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
The Bucks desired Evan Mobley and all of the Cavaliers’ future draft picks in return for Antetokounmpo, who remained with Milwaukee past the deadline.
“The Cavaliers, league sources say, contacted the Bucks about Giannis Antetokounmpo before the deadline as well,” Fischer wrote. “And we’re told it would take Evan Mobley and all of Cleveland’s available draft capital to get it done. That’s a trade construction that presumably would have Mobley stans scoffing, but it’s a move that no shortage of rival executives I’ve discussed it with say they would make.”
The Cavaliers acquired James Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Darius Garland at the deadline.
Meanwhile, the Bucks and Antetokounmpo are widely expected to part ways this offseason.
Antetokounmpo has spent his entire NBA career with the Bucks. He’s a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, one-time Defensive Player of the Year and 10-time All-Star. Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee to the 2021 championship in six games against the Phoenix Suns. The Bucks have won only one playoff series since then and missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2016.
Antetokounmpo will make $58.5 million next season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season. The superstar forward is eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million extension with the Bucks on October 1. If he declines the extension, Antetokounmpo will be traded, according to Milwaukee co-owner Wes Edens.
Antetokounmpo holds career averages of 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. It will be intriguing to see where he’s playing next season.
Along with the Cavaliers, Antetokounmpo has been linked to the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors in trade rumors.
