Dallas Mavericks Clear Cooper Flagg For Madison Square Garden Debut vs. New York Knicks

The Dallas Mavericks will have rookie forward Cooper Flagg available Monday night at Madison Square Garden after clearing him to play following pregame warmups, resolving his game-time status ahead of a matchup with the New York Knicks.
Flagg had been listed as questionable with a left ankle sprain after missing Dallas’ previous two games, but he went through his full pregame routine and was cleared following evaluation by the team’s medical staff. His return comes as the Mavericks continue to navigate one of the league’s longest injury reports while trying to build momentum on the road.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd confirmed Flagg remains questionable and will be evaluated on the floor before a final decision is made.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd indicated earlier in the day that Flagg’s availability would be determined after warmups.
“Cooper is questionable,” Kidd said. “He’ll warm up and we’ll see how he feels after that. As of now, Russell, Washington, Gafford, Davis, Lively, Irving, and Exum are all out.”
Cooper Flagg’s Production Central to Dallas Mavericks’ Offense
Flagg has been a focal point of Dallas’ offense throughout the season, averaging 18.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 40 games while logging 34.1 minutes per contest. With multiple starters sidelined for extended stretches, the rookie has consistently taken on expanded responsibilities as both a scorer and playmaker.
Before his brief absence, Flagg delivered several high-usage performances, including a 27-point outing against Brooklyn on Jan. 12 and a 26-point, 10-rebound, eight-assist night at Utah on Jan. 8. His most recent appearance came Jan. 14 against Denver, when he was limited to 15 minutes before exiting with ankle discomfort.
Monday marks Flagg’s first NBA appearance at Madison Square Garden. Kidd acknowledged the significance of the venue while noting that Flagg is familiar with the setting from his college career.
“I think it’s always exciting to play here in the Garden,” Kidd said. “He’s been here before with Duke, so some of that ‘first-time’ feeling is taken away. These young men get to play in the best arenas in the world, even before they’re pros. But as a pro, if he can go tonight, he’ll be excited. Anytime you come to the Garden, it’s exciting. This is one of the best arenas in the world.”
Pace and Shooting the Blueprint if Cooper Flagg Plays
Even with Flagg returning to the lineup, Kidd said the Mavericks’ priority is maintaining the pace and shooting rhythm that fueled recent success.
“You look at the pace,” Kidd said. “Can we continue to play with that pace when he’s on the floor? And then continue to keep shooting the ball straight. The group right now is shooting the ball well and playing a little bit faster than normal. If we can keep that pace, keep shooting and scoring up, hopefully that gives us an opportunity to win tonight.”
Dallas leaned heavily into early offense, ball movement, and perimeter shooting during back-to-back wins over Utah, producing some of its most fluid offensive stretches of the season despite heavy rotation turnover.
New York Knicks Get Key Starters Back
The challenge is heightened by New York’s improved availability. Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart are both available after dealing with recent ankle issues, restoring much of the Knicks’ offensive organization and physical edge.
Kidd highlighted Brunson’s impact as a focal point of the matchup.
“You start with Brunson being named an All-Star starter again,” Kidd said. “That just shows how dominant of a career he’s had. He puts a lot of pressure on the defense. He enjoys playing the game the right way. You add Hart and his toughness, and then Brunson shooting the three at a high rate. This group plays hard. It’s hard to beat them here at home.
“When you talk about the head of the snake, Brunson is one of the best players in the world. Him coming back tonight puts a lot of pressure on our defense.”
With Flagg cleared to play and the Knicks getting two key contributors back, Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day matchup sets up as a test of depth, pace, and execution for a Mavericks team continuing to adapt amid ongoing injury challenges.
