Sources: Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings Linked To Jonathan Kuminga Trade Market

As the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline approaches, the Los Angeles Lakers are among the teams to watch in the market for Jonathan Kuminga, according to sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com.
Kuminga officially became trade eligible on Jan. 15, accelerating conversations that had been building quietly for weeks. Even as the Golden State Warriors have stabilized on the court after an uneven start to the season, Kuminga’s role — and long-term fit — has remained unresolved, keeping him central to Golden State’s deadline planning.
A significant driver of league-wide interest is Kuminga’s contract structure. He is on a two-year deal worth approximately $46.8 million, with a team option for the 2026–27 season valued at about $24.3 million. That framework allows a receiving team to treat him as either a short-term salary or a controllable young piece, depending on roster direction and competitive timeline.
Sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com that Golden State has prioritized expiring contracts in Kuminga-related talks and is motivated to move him, even if no deal appears imminent. That preference has narrowed the pool of clean suitors and elevated teams capable of absorbing or rerouting short-term money.
From an on-court standpoint, Kuminga’s role has been limited this season. He has averaged 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 24.8 minutes per game across 18 appearances, and he has not played 20 minutes or more in a game since Dec. 6.
Why the Los Angeles Lakers Fit This Market
The Lakers’ payroll structure gives them a degree of lineup and salary flexibility that fits with Golden State’s preference for expiring or short-term money. Los Angeles controls a mix of contracts that can be aggregated or rerouted in multi-team constructions, which matters in a market where matching salary cleanly can be as important as the player valuation itself.
Sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com that Los Angeles has been evaluating pathways to add athleticism and defensive versatility on the wing as it continues to build around Luka Dončić. Kuminga’s physical profile and contractual control align with those priorities, keeping the Lakers in the cluster of teams positioned to engage if Golden State accelerates talks closer to the deadline.
Dallas Mavericks’ Position in the Market
The Dallas Mavericks have been among the teams monitoring Kuminga’s situation, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com, consistent with their broader, value-disciplined posture at the deadline. Sources indicated Dallas has held internal discussions evaluating Kuminga’s profile and contract structure, though the Mavericks are not viewed as a primary driver of the market at this stage.
A Kuminga-to-Dallas deal that doesn’t involve Anthony Davis in some fashion would be challenging. The Mavericks lack expiring salaries and movable assets to include in a trade. As reported by DallasHoopsJournal.com, most structures are not considered clean, but sources say that it is not impossible.
That approach aligns with Dallas’ ongoing effort to balance short-term decisions with long-term roster construction around Cooper Flagg, keeping the organization in an evaluative stance as the broader trade landscape develops. Kuminga is believed to be viewed as a potential fit with Flagg without being required to take a significant commitment.
Sacramento Kings Continue to Linger
The Sacramento Kings also remain linked to Kuminga, dating back to the offseason, when mutual interest existed, but no deal materialized, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com. The Kings’ interest dates back to Kuminga’s restricted free agency last summer, when they engaged the Warriors and made him a key target.
Sacramento was, at one point, willing to offer Malik Monk plus a protected first‑round pick for Kuminga, but Golden State did not like that package, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com. Sacramento has limited options to send out expiring salaries and intriguing assets with trade value.
“The Kings projected to be a bad team as they’ve proven to be — it’s a bad deal to take a protected pick from a team like that, especially when attached to a contract like Monk’s,” one source said. “Sacramento made tons of calls to get off of Monk’s contract in the offseason, but nobody was interested.”
Looking Ahead
With the deadline approaching, Kuminga’s name remains firmly entrenched in trade conversations.
The Lakers’ combination of roster priorities and payroll flexibility places them among the teams best positioned to match Golden State’s stated preference for expiring money, should negotiations gather momentum ahead of Feb. 5.
