Cooper Flagg Ruled Out As Dallas Mavericks Open Homestand Against New York Knicks

The Dallas Mavericks will be without Cooper Flagg on Wednesday night after the rookie forward was ruled out due to an illness, removing the team’s most productive scorer from an already thin rotation as the New York Knicks visit American Airlines Center.

Flagg had been listed as questionable earlier in the day after missing shootaround, but the Mavericks determined hours before tipoff that he would not be available.

The 18-year-old had been playing through a right thumb sprain in recent games, yet remained Dallas’ most reliable offensive option, averaging 15.5 points per game, while adding 6.3 rebounds, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in 33.7 minutes per game. On the season, he’s shooting 45.5% from the floor, 29.3% from deep, and 78.3% on free throws.

His sudden absence leaves a significant void for a team already short on creators.

Cooper Flagg’s Illness Adds New Obstacle to a Heavy Workload

Flagg has carried an outsized burden for the Mavericks during a stretch defined by injuries, roster shuffling, and inconsistent continuity. His ability to handle the ball, create shots from the wing, and absorb contact had become increasingly crucial with Kyrie Irving, Danté Exum, and Ryan Nembhard all sidelined.

This latest setback removes the one scorer Dallas could consistently depend on during a demanding early-season schedule. Beyond his production, Flagg has been one of the few players the coaching staff trusted to initiate offense in key moments.

Jaden Hardy said players are trying to steady the team through the instability.

“It’s a great group of guys,” Hardy said. “We all like being around each other. We all know this is not going to last that long.”

Growth at Natural Position Put on Hold

Flagg had also begun to look more settled since shifting back into his natural forward role after opening the season at point guard. Teammates and coaches noted how the adjustment had reduced pressure and allowed him to play more instinctively.

Daniel Gafford, who returned to the lineup Wednesday, explained how the move improved Flagg’s comfort level.

“I feel like he’s more comfortable,” Gafford said. “I’ve seen that he said it takes a lot of responsibility to play that one spot. It really does — you’ve got to facilitate a lot and you’re learning the guys you’re out there playing with. So I feel like he’s in the best position he can possibly be in, and that’s the right position for him to be playing.”

Flagg’s illness now interrupts that progress and forces Dallas to reconfigure its rotation yet again.

Dallas Mavericks Still Waiting on Key Reinforcements

While Flagg is out, Dallas continues navigating several longer-term absences. Anthony Davis (left calf strain), Irving (left knee surgery), Exum (right knee injury management), and Nembhard (left knee sprain) all remain unavailable.

Head coach Jason Kidd said Nembhard, who sprained his knee during an individual workout, is expected to miss another two to three weeks. Davis remains at least seven to ten days from returning.

Even with Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II rejoining the frontcourt, the loss of Flagg removes the team’s most stable scoring presence on a night when the Mavericks hoped to build momentum at home.

Dallas entered Wednesday at 4–11, searching for answers during one of the most challenging stretches of its season — now without the player who has consistently kept its offense afloat.
