Will Cooper Flagg Play Against Kon Knueppel And Charlotte Hornets On Tuesday?

The most anticipated head-to-head matchup of the Dallas Mavericks’ six-game road trip may not happen. Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick and Rookie of the Year frontrunner, is listed as doubtful for Tuesday’s game at the Charlotte Hornets — an upgrade from out, but still a designation that typically means a player does not play.

Flagg has been sidelined since Feb. 10 with a left midfoot sprain and is likely to miss his eighth consecutive game.

Before Sunday’s loss to Oklahoma City, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Flagg would “probably not” play in Charlotte. Monday’s upgrade to doubtful suggests some progress on the foot, but Kidd’s comments remain the most recent guidance on the situation.

What Doubtful Means for Cooper Flagg’s Return

In NBA injury report terminology, doubtful means a player has roughly a 25% chance of playing. It is a step in the right direction, but Tuesday remains unlikely for Flagg, barring a significant turn before tip-off. Dallas is handling the injury on a day-to-day basis and has not set a timetable for his return.

The Mavericks have been cautious with Flagg throughout the injury. What was initially expected to sideline him through All-Star Weekend has now stretched well beyond it. The organization has shown no urgency to rush him back onto a team sitting at 21-39, with more hope of playing in the NBA Draft lottery to land another No. 1 pick than a meaningful postseason outlook.

The Cooper Flagg vs. Kon Knueppel Storyline

The stakes around Tuesday’s game go beyond the standings. Flagg and Hornets guard Kon Knueppel were Duke teammates and roommates last season, and their professional paths have mirrored each other closely in their rookie campaigns.

Their first meeting this season, a 123-121 Charlotte win in Dallas on Jan. 30, was everything the matchup promised. Flagg scored 49 points — the most by any Maverick this season and a franchise rookie scoring record. Knueppel answered with 34, hitting eight three-pointers — one shy of the NBA rookie record — and knocking down two game-winning free throws with 4.1 seconds left. The two combined to shoot 30-of-45 from the field. ROY voters took notice.

With 22 games left in the regular season, every head-to-head opportunity carries weight. Missing this one doesn’t eliminate Flagg from the race, but it hands Knueppel an uncontested night at home against a shorthanded Dallas roster.

Where the NBA’s Rookie of the Year Race Stands

The two rookies have put up nearly identical numbers. Flagg is averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.8 blocks on 48.2% shooting across 49 games. Knueppel is at 19.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on 48.9% shooting across 60 games, with a significant edge from three at 44.0% compared to Flagg’s 30.2% — though Flagg has shot 37% from beyond the arc in his last 14 games. Flagg also holds the edge in steals (1.2 vs. 0.8) and blocks (0.8 vs. 0.2).

Charlotte’s 30-31 record and playoff push give Knueppel a team-success argument that Flagg simply cannot match on a 21-39 Dallas squad. Many observers have often viewed Flagg as the frontrunner, but the missed games are a complicating factor that won’t go away.

What’s Next for Cooper Flagg

Even if Flagg sits out Tuesday, the road trip offers another opportunity. Friday’s game at Boston is the one most circled on his calendar — a native of Newport, Maine, Flagg grew up a short drive from TD Garden, and the Celtics matchup happens just once per year. If the foot continues to improve over the next few days, Boston becomes a realistic target for his return.

The Mavericks open the trip Tuesday at 6 p.m. CST at Spectrum Center in Charlotte.
