Cooper Flagg’s Return Timeline Murky For Dallas Mavericks, Including Rookie Showdown In Charlotte

Jason Kidd offered little optimism Friday when asked whether Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg could return anytime soon.

“Probably not that he will play,” Kidd said, when asked specifically about Tuesday’s road game in Charlotte.

That response points to Flagg missing at least three more games — Friday’s home matchup against Memphis, Sunday’s visit from the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Tuesday’s trip to Charlotte, where he would have faced fellow rookie Kon Knueppel in a meeting that had generated early-season buzz around the league’s first-year class.

Flagg has not appeared in a game since suffering a left midfoot sprain on Feb. 10 in Phoenix, and the Mavericks have avoided putting a firm timetable on his return. What was supposed to keep him out through All-Star Weekend has stretched beyond that, with Dallas handling the injury on a game-to-game basis as the foot continues to respond to treatment.

Friday’s game against Memphis will mark Flagg’s sixth consecutive absence and his 10th missed game of the season overall.

Cooper Flagg’s Rookie Season Interrupted

Flagg’s first NBA season has been rougher physically than anyone in Dallas would have liked, though nothing before this has been as severe as the current midfoot issue.

In January, he tweaked his left ankle against Brooklyn on Jan. 12, briefly left the game to have it taped, then returned to score 27 points in a Dallas win. Two nights later, against Denver, he turned the same ankle while defending Peyton Watson and was ruled out for the second half. The injury was diagnosed as a left ankle sprain and treated as a short-term condition.

Earlier in the season, Flagg also played through left shoulder soreness and a sprained right thumb that required a splint, neither of which led to an extended absence. Before the midfoot injury, he had missed just one game — a Nov. 19 contest against New York due to illness — after starting each of the first 15 games of his career.

The midfoot sprain hasn’t followed that pattern. Confirmed by MRI, it has already outlasted the Mavericks’ initial recovery window. Kidd’s suggestion that Flagg is unlikely to return as far out as Tuesday indicates the injury hasn’t responded as quickly as hoped. Dallas has been cautious throughout, and there’s no sign the Mavericks are changing course.

Will the Dallas Mavericks Shut Cooper Flagg Down?

With the Mavericks sitting at 21-37 and showing little sign of a late-season playoff push, some around the league have already floated the idea of shutting him down — both to protect the long-term health of the No. 1 overall pick and to preserve draft lottery positioning.

The organization hasn’t addressed that publicly, and Kidd has given no indication that it is under consideration. As March approaches with no return date in sight, though, the conversation isn’t going away.

Dallas Mavericks Adjust Starting Lineup

In Flagg’s absence, Dallas has continued to reshuffle its rotation. For Friday’s game against Memphis, Kidd started Brandon Williams at point guard alongside Max Christie, Khris Middleton, and Naji Marshall on the wing, with Daniel Gafford anchoring the middle.

The alignment reflects how banged up the Mavericks are, with Marshall and Middleton still carrying heavy roles with the roster thinned out.

Marshall has carried most of the scoring load. He is averaging 15.6 points this season and has scored 30 or more in three of Dallas’ last eight games. His 36-point, 10-rebound, six-assist performance Thursday against Sacramento was among the best individual outings in franchise history — and it still wasn’t enough to beat the team with the NBA’s worst record. That about sums up where Dallas is right now without Flagg.

No Clear Return Date for Cooper Flagg Yet

Flagg will not play on Friday against Memphis. He is unlikely to play Sunday against Oklahoma City or Tuesday in Charlotte.

Before the injury, he was averaging 20.4 points on 48.2% shooting, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists across 49 games, with 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks per night. The Rookie of the Year race was his to lose. The question now is how much of that rookie year he’ll actually get to finish.
