Rival teams expect the Dallas Mavericks to trade Anthony Davis, according to NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Stein is also reporting that Daniel Gafford is widely regarded as the most tradeable Maverick.

“Do the Mavericks move Anthony Davis before the Feb. 5 trade deadline in a nod to the increasingly appeal goal of prioritizing draft positioning? Rival teams are certainly already expecting it, but Davis on Sunday night missed his ninth straight game with a left calf strain and has been ruled out for the next 7-to-10 days at a minimum, which will cost him at least five more games,” Stein wrote. “The general consensus leaguewide is that Davis is going to have to put together a sustained stretch of productive basketball in December and January to generate the sort of trade interest Dallas would be hoping for after starting the season with Davis as a projected centerpiece. The 32-year-old is in Year 1 of a three-year, $175 million contract he signed while still with the Lakers.

“Daniel Gafford is widely regarded as the most tradeable Maverick between now and the Feb. 5 trade deadline in Year 1 of a three-year deal worth $54.4 million, but the injuries that have frequently derailed Davis and Dereck Lively II add a layer of complication even to Gafford’s status.”

The Mavericks fired Nico Harrison as general manager. Harrison traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last season for Davis and Max Christie.

NBA teams interested in trading for Davis hope he loses weight, sources told DallasHoopsJournal. Davis reported to training camp at 268 pounds, according to the roster the Mavericks released in September. That was 15 pounds heavier than what he was listed at the previous season with the Lakers.

Multiple teams are interested in trading for Davis, sources said, but those teams believe Davis needs to lose weight so he can be the mobile threat he usually is

A future Hall of Famer, Davis has appeared in just 14 games with the Mavericks since the blockbuster Dončić trade last season. The Kentucky product is making $54.1 million this season. He will make $58.5 million next season and has a player option for the 2027–28 season worth $62.8 million.

Gafford is making $14.4 million this season. He signed a three-year, $54.4 million extension with the Mavericks in July.
