According to NBA insider Tim MacMahon of ESPN, the Dallas Mavericks are expected to trade Anthony Davis and keep Kyrie Irving.
The Mavericks are 5-14. They are in 14th place in the Western Conference standings.
“Trading AD is a real possibility,” MacMahon said. “And I would even say likelihood this season. Trading Kyrie is not something that’s on the Mavericks’ priority list or it’s just straight up not something that they are interested in doing right now.”
Davis has played in just five games this season. He’s currently out with a left calf injury. The future Hall of Famer has appeared in only 14 games with the Mavericks since the Luka Dončić trade.
Meanwhile, it’s unknown when doctors will clear Irving to play again. The All-Star point guard tore his left ACL last season in March against the Sacramento Kings.
Davis is making $54.1 million this season, while Irving is making $36.6 million. Neither star has a no-trade clause.
Davis is averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks per game this season while shooting 52.0% from the field, 27.3% from beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free-throw line. He turns 33 in March.
The few teams interested in trading for Davis hope he loses weight, sources told DallasHoopsJournal. Teams believe Davis needs to lose weight so he can be the mobile threat he usually is.
Irving appeared in 50 games for the Mavericks last season. He averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.5 blocks per game while shooting 47.3% from the field, 40.1% from beyond the arc and 91.6% from the free-throw line.
Dallas signed Irving to a three-year, $118 million contract in July. Irving can become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 by declining his 2027-28 player option worth $42.4 million.
