Dallas Mavericks Officially Fire Nico Harrison, Name Michael Finley And Matt Riccardi Co-Interim GMs

The Dallas Mavericks announced Monday that the organization has relieved Nico Harrison of his duties as general manager and president of basketball operations, ending his tenure less than a year after overseeing one of the most polarizing trades in franchise history.
Governor Patrick Dumont made the decision following the Mavericks’ 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks — a game that ended with fans chanting “Fire Nico” after another late-game collapse. Dallas, now 3–8, has struggled to find rhythm amid injuries and roster turnover since Harrison reshaped the team’s core.
“This decision reflects our continued commitment to building a championship-caliber organization, one that delivers for our players, our partners, and most importantly, our fans,” Dumont said in a team statement.
Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi Take Over Basketball Operations
In conjunction with the move, the Mavericks appointed Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as co-interim general managers to oversee basketball operations while a full search begins for a permanent replacement.
Harrison was hired on June 28, 2021, after a two-decade career with Nike. He helped steer Dallas to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024 — the franchise’s first appearance since its 2011 championship. But this season’s disappointing start, compounded by the controversial trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, shifted internal expectations and external pressure.
Finley, a 15-year NBA veteran and two-time All-Star, joined the Mavericks’ front office in 2017 and has served in roles including vice president of player personnel and assistant general manager. Riccardi, a Plano native and former Brooklyn Nets executive, joined Dallas in 2022 and was promoted to assistant general manager in 2023.
Dallas Mavericks Fan Frustration Peaks as Injuries Mount
The Mavericks’ latest loss to Milwaukee only deepened the frustration surrounding the team’s direction. Rookie Cooper Flagg scored a season-high 26 points, but Dallas again faltered late. Anthony Davis missed his sixth consecutive game with a left calf strain, and Dereck Lively II sat for the eighth straight contest with a right knee sprain.
The Mavericks host the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night at American Airlines Center.
