Sources: Mike Penberthy Joining Dallas Mavericks’ Coaching Staff

The Dallas Mavericks are hiring veteran shooting coach Mike Penberthy to join Jason Kidd’s staff, league sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com.

Penberthy, a former NBA champion both as a player and assistant, most recently worked with the Denver Nuggets as a shooting coach and pro scout.

Known for his technical precision and development work with elite scorers, Penberthy has earned a strong reputation across the league. He won an NBA title as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 under Frank Vogel — working alongside Kidd — and previously served as a shooting coach with the Timberwolves, Pelicans, and Lakers. He also won a championship as a player with the Lakers in 2001.

The Mavericks are undergoing significant changes to their coaching staff ahead of the 2025–26 season. Penberthy joins following the departures of multiple key assistants.

Jay Triano was recently hired to replace Alex Jensen, who left to become the head coach at the University of Utah. Frank Vogel was hired to replace Sean Sweeney following his departure to become associate head coach with the San Antonio Spurs. Player development coach God Shammgod departed after his contract expired, accepting a new role with the Orlando Magic.

Former Mavericks assistant coach Jared Dudley recently joined the Denver Nuggets as a top assistant. Dudley had served as the Mavericks’ No. 3 assistant and had drawn interest from multiple teams this offseason. Dallas will need to find a new assistant to fill this role.

Dallas is expected to consider further additions, with former Lakers assistant Phil Handy remaining a name to watch. But Penberthy’s addition gives the Mavericks a proven shooting coach — and another familiar voice alongside Kidd — as the team looks to improve offensive efficiency and continue building around its new frontcourt core.
