Sources: Jared Dudley to Join Denver Nuggets’ Coaching Staff in Prominent Role

Jared Dudley is joining the Denver Nuggets’ coaching staff in a lead assistant role, league sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com. Dudley had served as one of the top assistants on Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas and was pursued by multiple teams this offseason.

The move marks another notable bench change for the Mavericks, who have lost several key assistants ahead of the 2025–26 season. Dudley will reunite with Nuggets head coach David Adelman, who is assembling his first staff since being promoted to lead the team. Dallas must now replace its No. 3 assistant role given Dudley’s departure.

Dudley joined the Mavericks in 2021 after a 14-year NBA playing career and quickly gained a strong reputation as a communicator and developmental voice. He held increasing responsibilities over his four seasons in Dallas and was viewed internally as a valuable connector between players and staff.

With Dudley leaving, Dallas faces another opening as it retools its coaching staff. The team recently added veteran coach Jay Triano to replace Alex Jensen, who departed midseason to become head coach at the University of Utah. Sean Sweeney also left to join the San Antonio Spurs, and longtime player development coach God Shammgod joined the Orlando Magic after his contract expired.

The Mavericks are actively pursuing shooting coach Mike Penberthy for a bench role, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com. Most recently with the Nuggets, Penberthy has built a reputation for his technical work with elite shooters and previously worked alongside Kidd with the Lakers. Former Lakers assistant Phil Handy is also a candidate under consideration.

Dudley’s move to Denver comes as the Nuggets aim to add experienced voices to their sideline following a second-round playoff exit. He is expected to hold a meaningful role on Adelman’s staff.
