DHJ Quick Take: Resilient Defensive Adjustments Spark Dallas’ Bounce-Back Performance
- The Two-Day Structural Reconstruction: Dallas leveraged a rare, multi-day preparation window—consisting of a film session, two full team practices, and a tactical shootaround—to integrate players who completely missed training camp, directly rectifying the spacing and rotation flaws that plagued their inconsistent start.
- Help-Side Integrity & Post Denials: By crowding the paint on post entries and flying out to shooters, the Wings neutralized Washington’s offensive threats and limited second-chance opportunities to just 2 offensive rebounds.
- Star Containment: Head coach Jose Fernandez’s defensive game plan held Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin well below their season scoring averages while forcing primary playmaker Sonia Citron into 5 costly turnovers and an uncharacteristic 7-point night.
- Historical Distribution Thresholds: Erasing the stagnant, “selfish” possessions criticized after the Minnesota loss, the Wings generated 30 total assists—the fifth-highest single-game mark in franchise history. This elite ball movement yielded an optimal balance on offense, with five players finishing in double figures.
- Rookie Integration: Operating within a controlled minutes-progression framework, top draft pick Azzi Fudd flashed advanced comfort in secondary actions, attacking closeouts off the bounce and shooting an efficient 6-of-9 from the floor to notch a season-high 12 points.
ARLINGTON, Texas — After a dominant 92-69 win against the Washington Mystics, the Dallas Wings look like they’re starting to figure things out.
The performance came after one of Dallas’ most productive stretches of preparation so far this season. With a film session, two practices and a shootaround to prepare for the matchup, the Wings had time to address many of the issues that have surfaced during their inconsistent start.
“There was a lot of chitter-chatter about everything that happened in the first three games,” Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale said. “But we haven’t even had much time to practice. Unfortunately, a couple of us missed training camp. So just having the practice that we were able to have these last couple days and hone in on the things that we need to do…that really helped us.”
Jessica Shepard Anchors Dallas on the Glass
The defining factor tonight for the Wings was execution. Following their 90-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, Coach Fernandez cited rebounding and defense as key factors that had to be cleaned up ahead of the Mystics game.
Dallas absolutely delivered on that tonight, out-rebounding Washington 31-24 and holding them to just 2 offensive boards. Forward Jessica Shepard led the effort on the glass with a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with her 12 points and 6 assists.
“I know (rebounding is) one of my biggest controllables in the basketball game,” Shepard said. “So, knowing that they have two really elite offensive rebounders on that team, I knew that we had to control the glass and I just wanted to do my part.”
Dallas Wings’ Defense Shuts Down Washington Mystics’ Big Three
Dallas also did an excellent job of stifling Washington’s big three. The Wings held forward Kiki Iriafen to just 9 points, 10 below her average, while forward Shakira Austin finished with 12 points, nearly 6 below her average.
But the highlight of Dallas’ defensive effort came against guard Sonia Citron. Despite entering the game sixth in the league in points per game, Citron was limited to an uncharacteristic 7 points, 17 points below her average, and committed 5 turnovers.
“We knew we had to do a great job on their big three,” head coach Jose Fernandez said. “I thought our posts did a good job in coverage. The ball’s the most important thing, and we weren’t concerned about my man scoring on me. It was us rotating (defensively) and making the ball move.”
Paige Bueckers Leads a Balanced Offensive Attack
After Fernandez criticized the team’s “selfishness” following the loss to Minnesota, Dallas responded with a complete turnaround in their win tonight. As a team, they finished with 30 assists, the fifth-most in team history. They also had five players score in double figures, showcasing the kind of ball movement and offensive balance the team had been searching for. Paige Bueckers led the team in both areas with 18 points and 7 assists.
“(It shows) that we can just score from every position,” Ogunbowale said. “I think we can have a lot of those games where how many assists and how many buckets we have is really high because if you don’t have a shot, your next player has a shot. So just moving the basketball…making the other teams guard and with the type of offensive players we have, it’s going to be really tough for people to guard us every night.”
Azzi Fudd Shows Growing Comfort in Dallas Wings’ Offense
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA draft, Azzi Fudd, also showed improvement last night. She finished with a season-high 12 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the field, adding 2 rebounds and 3 assists as she continues to look more comfortable in Dallas’ offensive flow.
“I think everybody was excited to see Azzi and how well she played and how she shot it and how she defended it and how she created off the bounce,” Fernandez said. “I’m glad that now we can continue to increase the minutes. She felt good. And it was good to see her, the comfort level that she played (with).”
Dallas Wings Face a Demanding Road Trip Ahead
Dallas will face another challenge as they begin a three-game road trip in a five-day span, starting with a matchup against the Chicago Sky on Wednesday.
After benefiting from multiple practice days ahead of the win over the Mystics, Dallas faces a different kind of test with the quick turnaround as the team shifts back to a more compressed game schedule.
“Tomorrow we travel,” Fernandez said. “We won’t practice tomorrow. We’ll watch film when we get up to Chicago. We’ll just have a shoot around to prepare. So, it’s gonna be a little different type of preparation that we haven’t had all year.”
That stretch doesn’t get any easier, with Dallas set to face the 2-1 Atlanta Dream and the 3-1 New York Liberty later in the trip. But after tonight’s breakout performance, the Wings believe momentum is finally starting to build, as long as they can sustain it.
“We can’t take a step back now,” Ogunbowale said. “We got to keep that going. This is what we envisioned us looking like and we just got to keep that up.”
