D’Angelo Russell Officially Signs Contract With Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks officially announced Wednesday that they have signed guard D’Angelo Russell. Per team policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed, but league sources previously told DallasHoopsJournal.com that Russell agreed to a two-year contract worth nearly $11.7 million, including a player option for the 2026–27 season.
Russell, 29, is expected to take on a key role to begin the season as Kyrie Irving continues his recovery from a torn ACL. The former All-Star provides immediate experience and playmaking, and will be counted on to help stabilize the backcourt rotation.
Last season, Russell averaged 12.6 points, 5.1 assists, and 2.8 rebounds across 58 games while splitting time between the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. Though his efficiency dipped — he shot 39.0% from the field and 31.4% from three — the Mavericks see him as a bounce-back candidate in a more structured offensive environment.
The 6-foot-3 guard owns career averages of 17.3 points, 5.7 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals across 629 games (536 starts) with the Lakers, Nets, Warriors, and Timberwolves. He earned All-Star honors in 2019 with Brooklyn and won the NBA Cup in 2023 as a member of the Lakers, playing alongside current Mavericks forward/center Anthony Davis.
Originally selected second overall by the Lakers in the 2015 NBA Draft, Russell starred at Ohio State for one season, averaging 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in 35 games. He earned the Jerry West Award and was a consensus First Team All-American and Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
A Louisville native, Russell attended Montverde Academy in Florida, where he won back-to-back national championships in 2013 and 2014. He will wear No. 5 for Dallas as he enters his 10th NBA season.
