Daniel Gafford Returns To Dallas Mavericks Practice, Doubtful Against Golden State Warriors

The Dallas Mavericks returned to the practice floor Wednesday, coming off one of their most complete performances of the season — a 114–97 road win over the New York Knicks — with their interior rotation beginning to stabilize ahead of Thursday night’s matchup against the Golden State Warriors.

That picture shifted Thursday morning, when the Mavericks updated their injury report. Both Moussa Cissé (illness) and Daniel Gafford (right ankle sprain) had originally been listed as questionable. By morning, Cissé was upgraded to probable, while Gafford was downgraded to doubtful — clarifying Dallas’ likely frontcourt options against Golden State.

Head coach Jason Kidd confirmed Gafford’s participation following practice while also addressing the broader health of the roster. Gafford was later listed as questionable to play on the injury report.

“D’Lo and Gaff went through practice, and P.J. went through practice as well,” Kidd said. “Moussa is sick, so he wasn’t here today.”

P.J. Washington and D’Angelo Russell were not included on the injury report and will be available to play on Thursday against the Warriors. However, Moussa Cissé is questionable due to illness. The team remains without Kyrie Irving (left knee surgery), Anthony Davis (left finger sprain), Dereck Lively II (right foot surgery), and Danté Exum (right knee surgery).

Daniel Gafford’s Status After Reaggravation

Gafford’s downgrade follows a brief return earlier this month. He had come back from a one-game absence and logged 18 minutes against the Denver Nuggets on Jan. 14 before the ankle flared up again. In that appearance, he totaled six points and 10 rebounds, giving Dallas interior presence and rebounding stability before the team shut him down once more.

Through 29 games this season, Gafford is averaging 7.8 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 62.9% from the field and 76.1% from the free-throw line. Nearly all of that production has come in the paint, where his vertical spacing and rim-running have allowed Dallas to play fast without sacrificing efficiency.

Defensively, his impact has been most apparent in Dallas’ ability to finish possessions. When Gafford has logged consistent minutes, the Mavericks have been better equipped to limit second-chance opportunities and avoid overhelping at the rim — an area that has required collective coverage during his absence.

With Gafford now doubtful, Cissé’s upgrade carries added significance. Dallas leaned heavily on activity, rebounding, and pace in its win at Madison Square Garden, and Cissé’s likely availability provides a physical interior option as the Mavericks attempt to sustain that approach.

Cissé has supplied energy minutes throughout the season, particularly as a rim protector and rebounder in smaller lineups. His presence allows Dallas to maintain defensive structure without fully abandoning the speed-and-space identity that has fueled recent success.

Matchup Context Against Golden State Warriors

Golden State enters Thursday without Jimmy Butler, but its most recent game underscored how its offensive profile has shifted.

In a 145–127 loss at Toronto, the Warriors leaned more heavily on Jonathan Kuminga, who finished with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting in 21 minutes while consistently applying downhill pressure. That interior emphasis presents a different challenge than Golden State’s traditional perimeter-heavy attack.

Kidd acknowledged that adjustment when looking ahead.

“He got off to a slow start, but it picked up in the second half,” Kidd said. “He’s a young talent who can score, and we expect to see him tomorrow.”

Without Gafford available, Dallas is likely to meet that pressure through collective help, activity on the glass, and early offense — the same formula that overwhelmed New York.

Balancing Pace Without Full Frontcourt Depth

Dallas has gained traction by playing faster, spacing the floor, and sharing the ball, but the tradeoff has often come defensively. Smaller lineups place heavier rebounding and rim-protection demands on wings and guards, narrowing the margin for error.

Cissé’s upgrade helps stabilize that balance, even as Gafford remains sidelined. His availability allows Dallas to preserve structure without slowing the tempo that has driven recent wins.

As the Mavericks prepare to host Golden State, the interior picture is clearer — if still incomplete. Gafford’s return is trending closer, but for now, Dallas will continue to adapt, leaning on activity, connectivity, and pace.

Against a Warriors team adjusting on the fly, that balance may matter as much as any single matchup.
