Donovan Mitchell and James Harden are expected to recruit NBA legend LeBron James to the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason, according to Cavaliers Nation.
James, currently a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason for the first time since 2018. He’s the best player in Cavaliers franchise history and was born and raised in Akron, Ohio.
Cleveland traded Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers for Harden at this year’s trade deadline. Both Harden and Mitchell have relationships with James, who hasn’t decided whether he will retire from the NBA after this season or continue playing.
The Lakers may not be interested in re-signing James since they are building around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves and will aggressively pursue a trade for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason.
James has played for the Cavaliers twice. He guided the franchise to the 2016 championship against the 73-9 Golden State Warriors for Cleveland’s only NBA title. The 2015-16 Cavaliers are the only team in NBA history to erase a 3-1 series deficit in the NBA Finals.
A future Hall of Famer, James will get his No. 23 jersey retired by the Cavaliers one day. It would be a storybook ending for the sports icon to end his basketball career where it started. Cleveland, of course, selected James with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.
In two stints with the Cavaliers, James averaged 27.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 1.6 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. He won two MVPs and one Finals MVP and made 10 All-Star teams with his hometown club.
If James doesn’t retire from the NBA this offseason, it will be intriguing to see where he’s playing next season. It will probably be the Lakers or Cavaliers.
