Dallas Mavericks Didn’t Consult Rich Paul On Anthony Davis Trade To Washington Wizards

The Dallas Mavericks didn’t consult Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group before trading Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards, according to NBA reporter Joe Vardon of The Athletic.
This is noteworthy because the Mavericks were expected to work with Paul on a Davis trade after Nico Harrison was fired as general manager.
The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers for James Harden. Paul, who represents Garland, was consulted on that trade.
“I’m told Klutch founder Rich Paul wasn’t consulted as the deal for Davis was put together (whereas he was consulted on the trade of Darius Garland to the LA Clippers),” Vardon wrote. “This is true. Paul conveyed his message to the Mavericks — do what’s best for the organization, trade Davis or extend him — one month ago.”
Davis is making $54.1 million this season. He’s eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension in August. The future Hall of Famer is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks per game. He’s appeared in just 20 games.
A top-75 player of all time, Davis is currently out with ligament damage in his left hand. It’s unknown when he’ll make his Wizards debut.
Paul’s priority was to get an extension done for Davis this offseason with the Mavericks, sources told DallasHoopsJournal, but it was unknown if the Mavericks would offer Davis an extension due to his age and injury history, which is why Paul wanted his client traded at the trade deadline.
Most people around the NBA expect Paul to pursue an extension for Davis with Washington’s brass this offseason, sources said.
The Mavericks are rebuilding around Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, while the Wizards are building around Davis, Trae Young, Alex Sarr, Tre Johnson, Bub Carrington and Bilal Coulibaly. Washington acquired Young from the Atlanta Hawks.
Davis turns 33 in March. He played in only 29 games with the Mavericks, who acquired the Chicago native from the Los Angeles Lakers last season in the stunning, blockbuster Luka Dončić trade. Davis finished his Dallas career with averages of 20.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per game.
