DHJ Quick Take
- Extension Likely Declined: Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to turn down a long-term contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks this summer.
- Immediate Outlook: According to reporting from Shams Charania, the superstar forward is not currently prepared to make a long-term commitment when the organization approaches him in June.
- Simple Ultimatum: The Bucks are expected to seek a clear “yes” or “no” regarding his future with the team, with current indications pointing toward a “no” for the time being.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to decline a long-term commitment to the Milwaukee Bucks this offseason, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Antetokounmpo is eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million extension with the Bucks on October 1.
“Any conversation that the Bucks are going to have with Giannis Antetokounmpo, from my understanding, is going to be a very simple one. ‘Do you want to stay here long-term and commit long-term in June?’ The answer, from all accounts, is going to be no,” Charania said.
“And at that point, the question is going to be where does Giannis want to go? Where does he want to play for and commit long-term? Because he’s got just one guaranteed year left on his deal. You guys know this, especially in the NBA, that gives a player of this caliber a ton of leverage, a ton of sway on where he ends up.”
The Bucks are open for business on trade calls and offers for Antetokounmpo, who believes the time has come for him and the franchise to part ways.
Antetokounmpo guided the Bucks to the 2021 championship in six games against the Phoenix Suns. Milwaukee has won just one playoff series since then and missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2016.
A future Hall of Famer, Antetokounmpo has spent his entire NBA career with the Bucks. He’s a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, one-time Defensive Player of the Year and 10-time All-Star.
Antetokounmpo will make $58.5 million next season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.
A top-75 player of all time, Antetokounmpo holds career averages of 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. The superstar forward has been linked to the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks in trade rumors.
All signs point toward the Bucks trading Antetokounmpo this offseason. It will be intriguing to see where Giannis is playing next season.
