DHJ Quick Take
- The Ultimatum: Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Wes Edens confirmed the franchise will either extend Giannis Antetokounmpo by Oct. 1 or trade him, stating the team “can’t afford” to let him play out an expiring contract.
- Miami’s Blockbuster Proposal: A new trade framework from Bleacher Report suggests the Miami Heat could land the two-time MVP for a six-asset package including Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kel’el Ware.
- East Coast Preference: Antetokounmpo reportedly prefers a move to the East Coast to be geographically closer to his family in Greece, making Miami a primary destination for the 10-time All-Star.
A blockbuster offseason NBA trade proposal sending Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat has been created.
In a story called “5 NBA Offseason Trade Ideas That Need to Happen,” Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report proposed that the Heat trade Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., unprotected firsts in 2030 and 2032, and a first-round pick swap in 2031 to the Bucks for Antetokounmpo this summer.
The Heat tried to trade for Antetokounmpo at the 2026 NBA trade deadline. Hall of Famer Pat Riley will attempt to acquire Antetokounmpo again this offseason.
The Alex Saratsis Connection: Why the Miami Heat Are Favorites
Antetokounmpo and Heat All-Star Bam Adebayo have the same agent, Alex Saratsis of Octagon. Miami has been looking for a superstar ever since LeBron James left in 2014, and Antetokounmpo certainly fits the bill of a superstar. He’s a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, and one-time Defensive Player of the Year.
A future Hall of Famer, Antetokounmpo prefers playing for an East Coast team since the East Coast is closer to Greece, according to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report. Miami is an East Coast city. Antetokounmpo’s wife and kids live in Greece, which is why he wants to play in a city close to Greece.
One of the top two-way players of all time, Antetokounmpo holds career averages of 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game. He’s been in the NBA since 2013. The Greek Freak led the Bucks to the 2021 championship against the Phoenix Suns, but he hasn’t been past the second round of the playoffs since 2022.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Contract and the Wes Edens Ultimatum
A top 75 player of all time, Antetokounmpo is eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million extension with the Bucks on October 1. If he declines the extension, Antetokounmpo will be traded, per Milwaukee co-owner Wes Edens.
“Giannis is going into the last year [of his contract],” Edens told Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. “So one of two things will happen: Either he will be extended, or he’ll be traded. The likelihood you’ll let him just kind of play out the last year, we can’t afford that. It’s not consistent with what’s good for the organization. That’s not a Giannis issue. That’s any player that’s in their last year.”
All signs point toward Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee parting ways this offseason. It will be fascinating to see if Riley and Miami can finally acquire the 10-time All-Star.
