According to Ryen Russillo, “guys hate playing” with Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young.

The Hawks, who have played better this season without Young, are open to trading the All-Star, sources told Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.

“So I asked somebody in the NBA, we’ll do this every week on this, I said just give me a kind of breakdown of the Trae Young trade market,” Russillo said on his podcast. “So, ‘It’s hard to think of a team that’s trying to win this season that Trae would help, especially once you factor in what that team would be losing from the players they would have to send back as matching salary. He doesn’t defend. He doesn’t rebound. Guys hate playing with him.'”

Extension talks between Young and the Hawks haven’t progressed and Atlanta has been gathering intel about Young’s marketplace dating back to the offseason, sources told Afseth.

Young is making $45.9 million this season. The Oklahoma product can become an unrestricted free agent next offseason by declining his 2026-27 player option worth $48.9 million.

The Hawks and Dallas Mavericks have spoken about an Anthony Davis trade, but Dallas isn’t interested in trading for Young and prefers to keep Kyrie Irving, sources told Afseth.

The Hawks would like to trade for Davis at the right price, sources told Afseth, but the Mavericks’ lack of interest in acquiring Young complicates that scenario. Dallas wants to keep Irving because the coaching staff believes Cooper Flagg needs to play with an elite point guard to develop properly, sources told Afseth.

Young is averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per game this season while shooting 41.5% from the field, 30.5% from beyond the arc and 86.3% from the free-throw line. The Hawks are 2-8 with the four-time All-Star in the lineup.
