The Atlanta Hawks are open to trading All-Star point guard Trae Young, NBA sources told Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.

The Hawks and Dallas Mavericks have spoken about an Anthony Davis trade, but Dallas isn’t interested in trading for Young and prefers to keep Kyrie Irving, sources told Afseth.

Extension talks between Young and the Hawks haven’t progressed and Atlanta has been gathering intel about Young’s marketplace dating back to the offseason, sources told Afseth.

The Hawks have played better this season without Young, who is making $45.9 million this season. The Oklahoma product can become an unrestricted free agent next offseason by declining his 2026-27 player option worth $48.9 million.

The Hawks would like to trade for Davis at the right price, sources told Afseth, but the Mavericks’ lack of interest in acquiring Young complicates that scenario. Dallas wants to keep Irving because the coaching staff believes Cooper Flagg needs to play with an elite point guard to develop properly, sources told Afseth.

Davis is eligible for a four-year, $275 million maximum extension in August. The 2020 NBA champion is making $54.1 million this season. He’ll make $58.5 million next season and has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.

Sources told Afseth that Davis will seek a contract extension from the Mavericks in the offseason if he doesn’t get traded this season. If Dallas does trade Davis, the future Hall of Famer and his agent — Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group — will pursue an extension with the team he gets traded to.

The Mavericks, who traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last season for Davis and Max Christie, signed Irving to a three-year, $118 million contract in July. Irving is making $36.6 million this season. He can become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 by declining his 2027-28 player option worth $42.4 million.

Afseth reported in early December that Irving could return to the Mavericks’ lineup before the All-Star break. Irving tore his left ACL on March 3 against the Sacramento Kings.
