DHJ Quick Take
- Waived for Conduct: The Chicago Bulls waived Jaden Ivey, citing “conduct detrimental to the team.”
- Controversial Stance: Ivey drew significant backlash for social media posts condemning the NBA’s promotion of Pride Month, which he labeled a celebration of “unrighteousness.”
- Strange Question: Ivey asked Bulls reporters personal questions.
According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Jaden Ivey asked Chicago Bulls reporters if they “fornicated before marriage.”
The Bulls, who acquired Ivey from the Detroit Pistons, waived the guard for conduct detrimental to the team.
“Before Ivey even stepped foot on Chicago soil there were rumblings from Detroit that the shooting guard was a ‘preacher.’ They undersold it,” Cowley wrote. “His interviews became sermons in which he was asking reporters if they’ve been ‘saved’ and if they ‘fornicated before marriage.'”
Ivey went viral on social media after he posted a lengthy video about religion with anti-gay sentiments. The Purdue product called out the NBA for promoting Pride Month, saying it celebrates “unrighteousness.”
“The world proclaims LGBTQ, right?” Ivey said on IG Live. “They proclaim Pride Month and the NBA does, too. They show it to the world. They say, ‘Come join us for Pride Month to celebrate unrighteousness.’ They proclaim it on the billboards. They proclaim it on the streets. Unrighteousness.”
After getting waived by the Bulls, Ivey went on social media again.
“[The Bulls] said my conduct is detrimental to the team,” Ivey said. “Why didn’t they just say, ‘We don’t agree with his stance on LGBTQ?’ Why didn’t they say that? How is it conduct detrimental to the team? What did I do to the team? What did I do to the players?”
Ivey appeared in four games with the Bulls after getting traded by the Pistons. He averaged 11.5 points per game before getting shut down for the season because of a sore left knee.
Chicago head coach Billy Donovan spoke to reporters before the Bulls lost to the San Antonio Spurs on March 30 about the team’s decision to part ways with Ivey.
“There’s a certain level of expectations and standards that are here,” Donovan said. “Everybody comes with their own personal experiences, right? But we have to all be professional, there has to be a high level of respect for one another, and we’ve got to help each other and be accountable to those standards.”
Ivey was the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. He holds career averages of 14.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game with the Pistons and Bulls.
