Jason Kidd could transition into a front office role for the Dallas Mavericks, according to NBA insider Chris Mannix of SI.

The Mavericks fired Nico Harrison on Tuesday.

“Then there is Jason Kidd. Kidd is in good standing in Dallas, both with ownership—which has extended him twice—and a fan base that remembers how Kidd helped deliver a championship as a player and steer the team to the Finals as a coach,” Mannix wrote. “His hands are (publicly, at least) clean in the Luka Dončić deal—Harrison gave him cover when he said he didn’t inform Kidd of the trade until it was completed—and no one is pointing fingers his way for the flop of the Mavs’ injury-riddled roster. Under a Kidd regime, Dirk Nowitzki could be brought back into the fold.

“Will Kidd want the job? Probably, people who know Kidd say. Kidd has craved input in personnel decisions at previous stops. And while he has come into his own as a coach in Dallas, a rebuild around Cooper Flagg is inevitable. Better to oversee it from an executive office than the coach’s box.”

The Mavericks signed Kidd to an extension in the offseason. He’s been the head coach in Dallas since 2021. The Hall of Famer guided the franchise to the NBA Finals in 2024, where the Mavericks lost to the Boston Celtics in five games.

Kidd was serious about wanting the New York Knicks job this offseason, sources told DallasHoopsJournal, but the Mavericks were never going to grant the Knicks permission to speak with the NBA legend.

Dallas has started the season 3-8. Anthony Davis has appeared in just 14 games with the Mavericks since the blockbuster Dončić trade last season and it’s unknown when Kyrie Irving will play again after the All-Star point guard tore his left ACL in March.
