The Dallas Mavericks announced Tuesday that head coach Jason Kidd has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, keeping him at the helm as the franchise continues its pursuit of another NBA championship.
Kidd, entering his fifth season as head coach, has led the Mavericks to two 50-win campaigns, including a trip to the 2022 Western Conference Finals and a berth in the 2024 NBA Finals. He was originally hired as the team’s 10th head coach on June 28, 2021.
Patrick Dumont, Nico Harrison Praise Jason Kidd’s Leadership
Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont praised Kidd for his steady leadership and commitment to building a winning culture.
“Our entire organization deeply appreciates Coach Kidd’s leadership, focus, and positive energy,” Dumont said. “His achievements on the basketball court as a player and coach are well documented, but I know the most important thing to Jason is his ability to have a positive impact on people’s lives, and specifically young people. Coach Kidd embodies everything our organization wants in a leader, and I am happy he will be here for many years to come.”
General Manager Nico Harrison echoed Dumont’s remarks, calling Kidd “the perfect head coach to lead this team to championship contention now and for years to come.”
“J-Kidd’s basketball résumé is one of the best in the game, and through every situation he has proven he’s the right person to lead the Mavericks,” Harrison said. “He has a track record of developing some of the best talent in the league, as well as the ability to connect with players to bring out the best version of themselves.”
Jason Kidd Reflects on His Dallas Mavericks Journey
Kidd expressed gratitude for the organization’s faith in his leadership and emphasized the strong relationship he has built with both Dumont and Harrison.
“I’m grateful for the belief that Patrick and Nico have in me, and the trust we’ve built while working together to construct a team that Dallas can be proud of,” Kidd said. “We have a great group of players here who love basketball, are talented, and coachable. It’s even more special that I can continue to coach the team that drafted me, and where I was able to win a title as a player. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and continuing to work toward bringing another championship back to Dallas.”
Kidd is in his third stint with the Mavericks after spending eight of his 19 NBA seasons as a player in Dallas. He helped the franchise capture its first championship in 2011 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018 for his individual career and again in 2025 as part of the U.S. “Redeem Team.”
A 10-time All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Kidd previously served as an assistant coach on the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020 title team before returning to Dallas.
With the extension, the Mavericks have ensured long-term stability under one of the league’s most accomplished figures as they aim to return to championship contention.
