Jonathan Kuminga Ruled Out Against Dallas Mavericks After Strong Start Cut Short By Injury

Jonathan Kuminga was ruled out for the remainder of Thursday night’s game against the Dallas Mavericks due to left knee soreness, the Golden State Warriors announced early in the third quarter.

Kuminga exited the game late in the second quarter and did not return after halftime. The Warriors made the ruling shortly after play resumed as they continued to evaluate the forward, who had been reintegrated into the rotation amid significant roster changes.

Injury Interrupts Jonathan Kuminga’s Promising First-Half Stretch

The injury occurred during second-quarter action when Kuminga tweaked his ankle and asked to come out of the game. He showed a noticeable limp while heading toward the bench and briefly sat courtside near the baseline before returning to the floor to shoot his free throws.

Despite the visible discomfort, Kuminga completed the trip to the line before heading to the locker room. He did not reappear following halftime and was officially ruled out early in the third quarter.

Before being sidelined, Kuminga delivered one of his most efficient stretches of the season. He scored 10 points in just nine minutes, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line, while adding two assists and two steals. He posted a team-high plus-18 during his time on the floor.

At the time Kuminga was ruled out, Golden State held a narrow 63–59 lead midway through the third quarter.

Golden State Warriors Role Expansion Comes Into Focus

Kuminga’s early exit came at a notable moment in the context of Golden State’s rotation. The fifth-year forward had recently returned to action after a stretch of 16 consecutive DNP-CDs and was expected to play a larger role as the Warriors adjust to life without Jimmy Butler, whose season ended earlier this week due to a torn ACL.

Before Thursday’s game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr acknowledged that Kuminga would factor more prominently as the team reshuffled its lineup.

“Everything’s a possibility right now,” Kerr said. “When you have an injury to not only one of your best players, but one of the best players in the league, it just changes everything. The puzzle completely changes.”

Kerr had also praised Kuminga’s readiness following his return earlier this week against Toronto, his first game action since mid-December.

“He came in, had great energy, attacked the rim, made some shots,” Kerr said. “I thought JK was really good. It’s a great sign with Jimmy out, obviously there’s a hole at that spot on our roster. JK is going to factor in here again, and really pleased with the way he stayed ready and stayed prepared. He got his opportunity and played really well.

“It’s been a month or so since he’s played. We haven’t had him at any practices. It’s hard to have any idea how someone’s going to play in that set of circumstances. But he was really good.”

Entering Thursday’s game, Kuminga had averaged 12.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 19 games this season. The Warriors did not immediately provide further details on his status beyond ruling him out for the remainder of the game.
