DHJ Quick Take: Wings-Fever Takeaways Before Tipoff
- Managed Workloads: In his unofficial WNBA debut, Jose Fernandez is prioritizing “the big picture” over preseason results. Expect heavy minutes dispersion between the first and second halves, with a focus on evaluating the full roster rather than overextending the active core of Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd.
- The Perimeter Gauntlet: Fernandez identified the Indiana Fever backcourt of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell as the primary challenge for his defense. He is looking for “multiple efforts”—specifically “X-ing out” and rotating to cover the backside—to contain Indiana‘s transition pace and rim-attacking gravity.
- The Odyssey Sims Scouting: Fernandez revealed that his interest in signing Odyssey Sims was solidified after watching her play in Athletes Unlimited (AU). He is specifically looking for her to translate the playmaking that helped the Fever reach the 2025 playoffs into his new offensive system.
- Half-Court Discipline: Beyond transition defense, Fernandez is watching how the Wings navigate Indiana‘s aggressive half-court coverages. Handling “ball-screen disruption” and “top-siding actions” will be the primary benchmarks for a backcourt still building chemistry without Arike Ogunbowale.
INDIANAPOLIS — Jose Fernandez spoke with reporters at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Thursday afternoon ahead of his first game as Dallas Wings head coach.
His pre-game insights centered on two themes the Wings will be working through across the night — how he plans to spread minutes across a thinned-down roster, and the specific challenge Indiana’s backcourt presents on both ends of the floor.
Minutes Will Be Spread, Especially in the Second Half
Fernandez was direct about how he intends to handle workloads in the team’s first of two preseason games.
“With the amount of practices we’ve had, tonight will be a big test in how we want to play. I’m looking forward to our spacing, pace, and execution. Defensively, communication, effort, and connectivity are key,” Fernandez said.
Dallas will work through the night without six players. Arike Ogunbowale, Jessica Shepard, Awak Kuier, and Costanza Verona are all out as they continue working through overseas commitments. Rookie guard JJ Quinerly remains out following October knee surgery, and forward Rayah Marshall is in concussion protocol. Veteran point guard Lindsay Allen carries a probable tag with a right hamstring designation.
He emphasized that minutes will look notably different across the two halves and that key players will see managed workloads with Sunday’s preseason finale already in mind.
“Minutes will be dispersed differently between the first and second half. The players know that,” Fernandez said.
Asked about the broader balance between evaluation and competitive standard, Fernandez said the goal is to play well and win without losing sight of the bigger picture, but the back-to-back preseason format will dictate how much heavy lifting any one player does Thursday.
“You always want to win. I don’t want to lose at anything. But you have to think big picture, which is May 9 and beyond,” Fernandez said.
That long-term framing, Fernandez added, shapes how the Wings will manage their workload throughout the night.
“We’re very conscious of minutes,” Fernandez said.
Indiana Fever’s Backcourt Headlines the Matchup
The biggest tactical conversation in Fernandez’s availability centered on Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, the Indiana backcourt pairing he expects to test his perimeter defenders, especially on a night that Aliyah Boston is sidelined.
“Their backcourt. The combination of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell is huge,” Fernandez said.
Indiana will be without Aliyah Boston and several other rotation pieces, but Fernandez said the depth absences don’t take much off the perimeter test.
“I know they’re missing some players, but that backcourt strength stands out,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez identified Indiana’s pace as the first concern.
“Their pace and how fast they play. Transition defense tonight will be key, stopping the point of attack and making sure we match up,” Fernandez explained. “Good transition teams don’t hurt you with open guys, they hurt you with players attacking. We’ve got to keep the ball in front of us, protect the rim, and have good loads. Once the ball gets reversed, we have to match up quickly.”
Indiana’s half-court defense is the second piece. Fernandez said the Fever’s aggressive coverages and ball-screen disruption are part of what Dallas will have to handle on the offensive end.
“They also do a really good job defensively in the half-court with different coverages, blowing up ball screens, being aggressive, controlling the defense, and top-siding actions,” Fernandez said. “So those are the two main things we have to deal with on both ends.”
Defensive Categories Fernandez Is Watching
When asked specifically what he’ll evaluate defensively, Fernandez laid out a chain of priorities that begins in transition and ends with finishing possessions.
“It starts with transition defense, stopping the point of attack and matching up. Running players off the line and executing what we went over in practice and film in terms of personnel and coverages, especially pick-and-roll,” Fernandez said.
When the initial defensive read breaks down, Fernandez said the next layer is collective help — the secondary efforts that keep a possession from spiraling into a high-percentage look for Indiana.
“We need to contain the dribble, keep the ball in front, and when things break down, have multiple efforts, helping outside the lane, covering the backside, X-ing out, and rotating. Then finish possessions by limiting them to one shot,” Fernandez said.
The defensive checklist mirrors the messaging Fernandez carried through training camp, where he repeatedly cited extra possessions and live-ball turnovers as the issues Dallas needs to clean up before the May 9 regular-season opener.
Sims Caught Fernandez’s Eye in Indiana
Fernandez also offered a brief window into the scouting process behind one of the Wings’ offseason additions, point guard Odyssey Sims, who returns to face her former team Thursday.
“I went to AU to watch her, and I was very impressed with how she played and how the Fever made the playoffs with her,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez also pointed to the excitement Sims has displayed for the offensive role she’ll have with Dallas.
“She’s excited about how she’ll be used offensively with us,” Fernandez said.
A First WNBA Game, but Not a First Game
For all the focus on Thursday being his unofficial debut as a WNBA head coach, Fernandez kept the personal stakes muted.
“It’s not about me. I’ve coached plenty of games. This is my first WNBA experience, but it’s still a preseason game. There’s excitement, but the focus is on preparing the team the right way,” Fernandez said.
He also pointed to the offseason work that informed his readiness for the night, including a USA Basketball stint in Puerto Rico.
“I haven’t been on the sidelines since last season, so I’m looking forward to that. We had about 25 practices, and then the experience with USA Basketball,” Fernandez said.
That training-camp foundation, plus the staff he assembled to support the move from college to the pros, gives Fernandez confidence that the Wings are in a position to play a clean game Thursday.
“It’s been a great training camp. I’ve hired a really good staff, and I think our team is prepared. I’m looking forward to seeing what we’ve worked on carry over,” Fernandez said.
