DHJ Quick Take
- The Blockbuster Proposal: A new trade framework from Bleacher Report suggests the Phoenix Suns could acquire Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for a package centered on Jalen Green and Khaman Maluach.
- Kawhi’s MVP Form: Despite the Clippers’ rebuilding status, Kawhi Leonard is averaging 28.3 points and shooting nearly 90% from the free-throw line, proving he remains an elite two-way force.
- The Booker Partnership: Moving to Phoenix would pair Leonard with Devin Booker, creating a veteran core designed to navigate a rugged Western Conference after the Clippers traded away James Harden and Ivica Zubac.
A blockbuster NBA trade proposal sending Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard to the Phoenix Suns this offseason has surfaced as the league prepares for a summer of major movement.
In a story titled “5 NBA Offseason Trade Ideas That Need to Happen,” Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report wrote that the Suns should trade Jalen Green, Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming, and a 2027 first-round pick to the Clippers this offseason for Leonard.
Most people in the NBA believe the Clippers should move Leonard this offseason since they are no longer a championship contender. Leonard has just one year left on his contract, set to make $50.3 million next season before hitting unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2027 if an extension isn’t reached.
The Phoenix Suns’ New Core: Pairing Kawhi Leonard with Devin Booker
This trade proposal pairs Kawhi Leonard with Devin Booker, Dillon Brooks, Grayson Allen, Collin Gillespie, Royce O’Neale, and Mark Williams. On paper, that veteran-laden core provides the Suns with the defensive versatility and playoff experience needed to compete in the West.
Leonard is putting up MVP numbers for the Clippers this season, showing the entire NBA world that he’s not even close to being washed. The California native is averaging 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game while shooting 50.4% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc.
A future Hall of Famer, Leonard is a two-time champion, two-time Finals MVP, and two-time Defensive Player of the Year. The San Diego State product holds career averages of 20.7 points and 1.7 steals per game across his tenure with the San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors, and Clippers.
Rebuilding in Los Angeles: The End of the Clippers’ Era
It will be intriguing to see where Leonard is playing next season. He will most likely not be on the Clippers since the team is officially rebuilding after trading James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers.
The Suns have a clear mandate to pair Devin Booker with another All-Star to keep their championship window open. Leonard remains one of the premier “two-way” players in the NBA and would undoubtedly alleviate the scoring and defensive burden currently placed on Booker.
