DHJ Quick Take: Wizards Eye Retaining Young and Davis
- Young’s Projected Return: Despite declining his player option for next season to enter free agency, Trae Young is widely expected to sign a new multi-year contract to remain with the Washington Wizards.
- Davis Expresses Commitment: Anthony Davis has informed management of his strong interest in staying in Washington long-term, anchoring a foundational core alongside Young and the franchise’s upcoming No. 1 overall draft pick.
- Massive Financial Outlook: Acquired from the Dallas Mavericks at the 2026 trade deadline, Davis missed the remainder of the season due to left hand ligament damage but remains a premier financial cornerstone, owed $58.5 million next season ahead of a $62.8 million player option.
Trae Young is expected to re-sign with the Washington Wizards, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.
Young is declining his player option for next season, but he’s likely going to sign a new multi-year deal with the Wizards, who have the first overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft.
The Wizards acquired Young from the Atlanta Hawks in January. Young played in only five games with Washington because of injuries. He averaged 15.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game.
A four-time All-Star, Young holds career averages of 25.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game with the Hawks and Wizards. He led Atlanta to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021 but hasn’t won a playoff series since then.
Young wanted the Hawks to trade him to the Wizards in January. All signs point toward Young being Washington’s starting point guard next season.
As for the Wizards’ other All-Star, Anthony Davis told Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger that he has strong interest in staying in Washington.
Davis, acquired by the Wizards from the Dallas Mavericks at the 2026 trade deadline in February, didn’t play for Washington this season because of ligament damage in his left hand. The future Hall of Famer will make $58.5 million next season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.
A top-75 player of all time, Davis has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Los Angeles Lakers and Mavericks. He’s a 10-time All-Star and one-time NBA champion with career averages of 24.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game. The Chicago native has made five All-NBA teams and five All-Defensive teams.
The Wizards are expected to draft AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson or Cameron Boozer with the first pick in this year’s draft. They could also trade the first pick for a luxurious haul.
Washington could be fun to watch next season if Young and Davis do, in fact, stay in the nation’s capital. The current roster is headlined by Davis, Young, Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Bilal Coulibaly and Bub Carrington and will add Dybantsa, Boozer or Peterson soon.
The Wizards haven’t made the playoffs since 2021. It will be fascinating to see how many games they win next season.
