Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce Have A Better Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Fit Than Miami Heat

DHJ Quick Take: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce Question Giannis Antetokounmpo–Bam Adebayo Fit in Miami

Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce said the Heat should only move Bam Adebayo for a Giannis Antetokounmpo–level player, while doubting that an Antetokounmpo-to-Miami pairing actually creates a contender. Both pointed to a more established team, with Cleveland and Evan Mobley floated as a cleaner alternative.

  • What did Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce say? Neither would move Bam Adebayo for less than a superstar return, and both are skeptical of the Miami fit for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
  • Who would justify moving Bam Adebayo? In their view, only a player on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s tier, and they question whether even that pairing works in Miami.
  • Why does it matter? It cuts against the frontrunner narrative as the Antetokounmpo market narrows to Miami and Boston.
  • What’s next? The 2026 NBA Draft, a two-night event on Tuesday, June 23, and Wednesday, June 24, with both rounds beginning at 7 p.m. CT (first round on ABC and ESPN, second round on ESPN); the draft serves as the unofficial deadline for an Antetokounmpo trade.

Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce said the Miami Heat should not part with Bam Adebayo for anything short of a Giannis Antetokounmpo–caliber return, and both questioned whether pairing the two-time MVP with Adebayo in Miami would actually push the franchise into title contention.

Garnett and Pierce made the comments on their “Ticket & The Truth” podcast, part of the KG Certified brand, weighing in on one of the offseason’s central questions as Antetokounmpo’s situation with the Milwaukee Bucks moves toward a resolution.

Their remarks land with the Antetokounmpo trade market narrowed to two realistic suitors. League reporting has framed it as a race between the Heat and the Boston Celtics, with Miami widely viewed as the frontrunner, and the 2026 NBA Draft on Tuesday, June 23, has come to serve as the unofficial deadline for a deal.

Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce Set the Bar for Moving Bam Adebayo

Asked what kind of player would justify trading Adebayo, both former champions set the line at the very top of the league.

“If you’re going to move him, it has to be for a player at the level of Giannis Antetokounmpo,” Garnett said. “Otherwise, you don’t move him.”

Pierce agreed that only a superstar-caliber return would warrant it.

“Absolutely. It has to be a superstar-caliber return,” Pierce said. “If it’s not someone like Giannis, then there’s no reason to trade Bam.”

That framing is largely hypothetical, because the reported Heat packages have not been built around Adebayo in the first place. The framework that has circulated centers on Tyler Herro, young big man Kel’el Ware, and wing Jaime Jaquez Jr., along with the No. 13 pick, a return that would keep Adebayo in place alongside Antetokounmpo rather than send him out. In that sense, Garnett and Pierce are setting a price for a scenario the Heat have not actually been pursuing.

Why Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce Question the Miami Fit

Garnett said he doesn’t like the fit in Miami, comparing it to the situation Antetokounmpo would be leaving behind.

“I don’t like the fit in Miami,” Garnett said. “Going from Milwaukee to Miami feels like a similar situation. I don’t think that move suddenly puts the Heat into championship contention.”

Pierce took the same position.

“If Giannis is going to leave Milwaukee, it should be for a move that clearly elevates him into a stronger title-contending situation,” Pierce said. “Miami doesn’t necessarily do that for me.”

Their skepticism tracks with one of the reported holdups in the sweepstakes, the question of how close Miami would really be to contention even after adding Antetokounmpo. The Heat missed the playoffs this past season for the first time since 2018-19, and the roster around Adebayo would still need substantial work to reach the level Garnett and Pierce are describing.

Cleveland Cavaliers, Evan Mobley Floated as a Cleaner Path

Pressed on what would make more sense, Garnett said Antetokounmpo doesn’t need to leave one situation only to end up in another that feels the same.

“It needs to be a true contention move,” Garnett said. “He doesn’t need to leave one situation just to end up in another that feels similar. A team with a stronger championship foundation would make more sense.”

Pierce pointed to the Cleveland Cavaliers, floating a deal that could be built around Evan Mobley.

“Something more along the lines of a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers, where a deal could potentially be built around a player such as Evan Mobley,” Pierce said. “That’s the type of move that could significantly alter the championship landscape.”

With Bucks ownership having signaled that Antetokounmpo’s future will be settled this offseason, a resolution is expected around the June 23 draft, leaving the outcome Garnett and Pierce would prefer — Antetokounmpo to a more established contender — as one of several still on the table.
