Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James Breaks NBA Games Played Record, Credits Longevity To ‘Availability’

Another day, another record for NBA legend LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers.

On Saturday (3/21) against the Orlando Magic, James played in his 1,612th regular-season game, breaking Hall of Famer Robert Parish’s iron-man record.

After the Lakers beat the Magic, James spoke about setting yet another NBA record.

“It was a regular prep day. I mean, I kept it, you know, the same as the previous whatever 1,600 whatever the record is … but I knew, you know, once I stepped on the floor and the game began that I was breaking the record, and … that’s a pretty cool thing,” James said, via The Athletic. “I said it the other night, the best thing you can have for your teammates is availability. And I try to be available throughout my career, two decades-plus … you know, to my guys. And … you know that’s just a byproduct of it.”

James has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice), Miami Heat and Lakers. He’s been in the NBA since 2003.

The 41-year-old James is now the NBA’s all-time leader in games played, points, field goals and minutes. He’s a four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP.

“He’s had an awesome season; he’s had an awesome career,” Lakers head coach JJ Redick said. “There’s just a deep-seated love for the game of basketball, and to do it as long as he has, you not only need to have the love, but you need to have the love for the commitment to prepare your body and to prepare your mind and to get your rest. He loves the process. He really does. He loves his process, he loves his routine, he loves the feeling of being diligent.”

James is arguably the greatest player in NBA history. The 22-time All-Star becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason for the first time since 2018. It’s unknown whether James will retire or continue playing next season.

James joined the Lakers in 2018. He led the franchise to the 2020 championship against the Heat at the Walt Disney World bubble.

King James has career averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game. It will be fascinating to see if he wins his fifth championship this season. The Lakers are in third place in the West.
