Anthony Davis’ Hand Still Not Healed; Washington Wizards Push Next Update To End Of Month

Washington Wizards fans waiting for Anthony Davis‘ debut with the team will have to remain patient.

The Wizards announced that Davis, who is out with ligament damage in his left hand, was re-evaluated on Thursday. It was determined that Davis’ recovery continues to progress positively, but the volar plate tissue in his left hand has not fully healed yet.

Davis will continue with conservative treatment and advance his basketball activity as tolerated. He will be re-evaluated at the end of the month and an update will be provided at that time.

A future Hall of Famer, Davis suffered an injury to his left hand on January 8 against the Utah Jazz and an MRI revealed ligament damage. The Dallas Mavericks traded the Chicago native to the Wizards at this year’s NBA trade deadline.

Davis is making $54.1 million this season. He’s eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension in August.

A top 75 player of all time, Davis is 33. He played in only 29 games with the Mavericks. Dallas acquired Davis from the Los Angeles Lakers last season in the stunning, blockbuster Luka Dončić trade.

Davis has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers and Mavericks. He’s a 10-time All-Star and one-time NBA champion with career averages of 24.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.

The Wizards acquired All-Star point guard Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks before trading for Davis. Washington hasn’t made the playoffs since 2021.

Wizards general manager Will Dawkins anticipates Davis playing again this season even though Washington has the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference.

“A.D. is a special player, a special talent,” Dawkins said. “He obviously opens up so much on offense because he demands double-teams. He can score in different areas. Defensively, he’s been an anchor, rebounder, rim protector when you have him at the four.”

Davis was the first overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. He won the 2020 championship with the Lakers against the Miami Heat at the Walt Disney World bubble.
