DHJ Quick Take: LeBron’s Free Agency Strategy
- Lakers Move First: LeBron James plans to wait for the Los Angeles Lakers to initiate contract negotiations and present him with an official offer this summer rather than making the first move.
- Unrestricted Market Return: The 41-year-old icon will enter unrestricted free agency following the 2026 NBA Finals, marking the first time he has been an open free agent since 2018.
- Primary Contenders: While dark-horse rumors have linked the future Hall of Famer to the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors, league insiders overwhelmingly expect him to either re-sign with the Lakers or return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a final career stint if he opts against retirement.
NBA icon LeBron James will wait for the Los Angeles Lakers to approach him with an offer this summer, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.
James becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 2026 NBA Finals for the first time since 2018.
“From what I am told, the LeBron side is waiting for the Lakers to come to LeBron,” Windhorst said. “They’re not going to go to the Lakers and say we would like. … Just like last year, they did not go to the Lakers and say we would like a contract extension please. The LeBron side, from what I am told, would like the Lakers to come and say LeBron, here is our plan for you. Or here is what we’re offering. And if they’re offering less than the max, here’s why, because we’re gonna use this cap space to sign these players and this is where you slot in.”
James has been with the Lakers since 2018. LAL won the 2020 championship but hasn’t gotten back to the NBA Finals since.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Lakers have made it clear they want James back next to Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves.
Most people who cover the NBA believe that if James doesn’t retire this offseason, he will either re-sign with the Lakers or return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third and final stint. The future Hall of Famer has also been linked to the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors.
A 22-time All-Star and arguably the greatest player in NBA history, James played in 60 games this regular season. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game while shooting 51.5% from the field, 31.7% from beyond the arc and 73.7% from the free-throw line, once again proving that he has conquered Father Time.
Los Angeles beat the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs but lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round. Dončić missed the entire playoffs because of a serious hamstring injury.
A top-75 player of all time, James is a four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP. He’s played for the Cavaliers (twice), Miami Heat and Lakers and is the all-time leader in points, field goals, games and minutes.
