The next step for Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James in his recovery from sciatica will be progressing to live five-on-five reps in practice, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.

James has been dealing with sciatica on his right side since the end of July.

“Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James continues to work out individually while recovering from the sciatica affecting his lower back and right side, and the next step in his return will be progressing to live 5-on-5 reps in practice, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.”

James is the oldest active player in the NBA. He turns 41 in December and has been in the league since 2003.

The leading scorer in NBA history, James has one year left on his contract with the Lakers. He becomes an unrestricted free agent next offseason for the first time since 2018.

James appeared in 70 games for the Lakers last season. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.6 blocks and finished sixth in MVP voting and made the All-NBA Second Team.

“While the Lakers are on the road, their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, will be practicing at the team’s practice facility in El Segundo, California. It is unclear whether James would join South Bay for practices or wait for the Lakers to return for a group session, sources told Charania.”

The Lakers are 6-2 on the season. They have the second-best record in the Western Conference.

James joined the Lakers in 2018. He led the franchise to the 2020 championship against the Miami Heat at the Walt Disney World bubble.

A future Hall of Famer, James is a four-time MVP, a four-time champion and a four-time Finals MVP. He’s played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice), Heat and Lakers.
