DHJ Quick Take: Dallas Wings Lean On Defense And Accountability vs. Chicago Sky
The Dallas Wings are leaning into defense, accountability and trust rather than overhauling anything after two winnable losses, with Aziaha James‘ defensive growth emerging as a key bright spot ahead of the Chicago Sky.
- Why aren’t the Wings making drastic changes after the losses to Golden State and Portland?
- How has Aziaha James become one of Dallas’ most physical perimeter defenders?
- What does Paige Bueckers mean by relying on defense to set the tone for the offense?
- What’s next? Dallas hosts Chicago tonight before facing Seattle on Monday.
ARLINGTON, Texas — After succumbing to the Golden State Valkyries in a 91-80 away loss on Wednesday, the Dallas Wings aren’t looking to make any drastic changes.
Instead, they plan to lean into and tighten the same formula they believe will eventually turn flashes of potential into consistent success: defense, accountability and each other.
The Wings enter tonight’s matchup against the Chicago Sky looking to respond after dropping winnable games to the Valkyries and the Portland Fire over the past week. The losses are separated by one of Dallas’ most impressive performances of the season, a 96-66 blowout victory over the reigning WNBA champions, the Las Vegas Aces.
Dallas Wings Lean On Short-Term Memory
For a team that has proven it can compete with the best teams in the league, the challenge has become producing that level of play consistently.
“We just can’t fault the losses,” sophomore guard Aziaha James said. “We just got to keep going.”
That short-term memory mindset has become a staple for the team this season. When asked about the team’s search for consistency, James pointed to film study, making adjustments and maintaining trust in one another rather than dwelling on missed opportunities.
“(We have to) just keep sticking together,” James said. “Working on our mistakes in practices, keep watching film, working on ourselves and just keep working. We have to keep going. It’s a long season ahead of us.”
Sophomore guard Paige Bueckers echoed a similar sentiment, emphasizing the importance of responding without allowing previous results to dictate future performances.
“We obviously can learn from the last game and what we need to improve on and what worked well,” Bueckers said after Friday’s practice. “But nothing that happened last game is going to dictate the outcome tomorrow.”
Aziaha James Emphasizes a Defensive Mentality
With Dallas being one of the most offensively explosive teams in the league, part of that response starts on the defensive end. One player who has embraced that mentality the most is James, whose defensive growth has become one of the bright spots of her 2026 season.
“A couple players on the team have just been telling me to keep pushing myself because (my defense) is showing out,” James said. “I’m just proud that my work is finally paying off. People aren’t pushing me around anymore. I’m starting to get a little up there. So yeah, I’m happy.”
James has quickly emerged as one of Dallas’ most physical perimeter defenders, recording at least two steals in each of her previous four games while being tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best guards.
James’ defensive emergence is no coincidence. Her growth reflects a larger emphasis within the Wings organization, where defense has become a focus as the team searches for consistency.
“Some nights the ball goes in and sometimes it doesn’t,” Bueckers said. “But how can we win when the ball isn’t falling? How can we rely on our defense to set the tone for our offense?”
What’s Next For The Dallas Wings
As the Wings look to rebound against Chicago and carry momentum into Monday’s matchup against Seattle, the blueprint remains unchanged:
Learn from the losses, let defense be the foundation, lean on each other and keep moving forward.
