Minnesota Timberwolves Called Milwaukee Bucks Again About Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade

DHJ Quick Take: Timberwolves Keep Pushing for Giannis

  • A New Blockbuster Attempt: The Minnesota Timberwolves have re-engaged the Milwaukee Bucks in trade discussions regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo, driven by a desire to pair the superstar forward with franchise cornerstone Anthony Edwards.
  • Steep Asking Price: While Minnesota remains highly interested, a deal faces significant hurdles as Milwaukee is maintaining a massive asking price for the multi-time MVP.
  • Heat Remain Favorites: Although the Timberwolves, Boston Celtics and Miami Heat have emerged as the primary teams heavily linked to Antetokounmpo, the consensus among NBA insiders is that the Heat will ultimately land him.

The Minnesota Timberwolves called the Milwaukee Bucks again about a blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.

Minnesota wants to pair Antetokounmpo with Anthony Edwards, but Milwaukee has a large asking price for Giannis.

“I’m told that the Timberwolves, for example, indeed circled back to the Bucks this week to see what it would take to make another run at pairing Antetokounmpo with Anthony Edwards … after The Stein Line revealed in late January that a partnership with Edwards had quietly appealed to Giannis for some time,” Fischer wrote. “Yet Milwaukee is said to have asked for even more now than the teams discussed in the winter when Minnesota was at the forefront of the Giannis Trade Chase along with Golden State and, of course, Miami.”

The Timberwolves, Miami Heat and Boston Celtics have been heavily linked to Antetokounmpo. Most NBA insiders expect the Heat to eventually land Giannis.

Minnesota beat the Denver Nuggets in the first round of this year’s playoffs in six games but lost to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round in six games. The Timberwolves, who made the conference finals in 2024 and 2025, need another star next to Edwards to become a legitimate championship contender and Antetokounmpo fits that bill.

However, since Antetokounmpo wants to play for an East Coast team because the East Coast is close to Greece, Miami and Boston are viewed as the frontrunners to acquire “The Greek Freak.”

Antetokounmpo’s wife and children don’t live with him in America during the NBA season. They reside in Greece, which is why Antetokounmpo is eying Miami and Boston.

Antetokounmpo will make $58.5 million next season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season. The Bucks signed Antetokounmpo to a three-year, $175 million extension in 2023. The star forward doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.

A future Hall of Famer, Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, one-time Defensive Player of the Year and 10-time All-Star. He has been in the NBA since 2013. The 31-year-old won back-to-back MVPs in 2019 and 2020 and became the third player in NBA history to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season in 2020.
