Mark Cuban Denies Dallas Mavericks’ Dwight Powell Will Retire After This Season

Mark Cuban has denied a rumor that Dallas Mavericks big man Dwight Powell will retire from the NBA after this season.
Powell is making $4 million this season in the final year of his contract.
Powell has been with the Mavericks since the 2014-15 season. He began his NBA career with the Boston Celtics and was traded to Dallas in the blockbuster Rajon Rondo trade on December 18, 2014.
The 34-year-old Powell has appeared in 720 games with the Mavericks in the regular season. He holds career averages of 6.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in a Dallas uniform.
Powell has played in 44 playoff games with Dallas. The veteran has career postseason averages of 2.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. He helped the franchise reach the NBA Finals in 2024, where the Mavericks lost to the Celtics in five games.
For Dallas this season, Powell has appeared in 20 games. He’s averaging 2.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting 65.0% from the field and 72.4% from the free-throw line.
The Mavericks are 9-16. They are in 11th place in the Western Conference standings. Jason Kidd’s group is 26th in the NBA in points per game, 14th in points per game allowed, 30th in offensive rating, seventh in defensive rating and 22nd in net rating.
Dallas’ roster could look very different soon, as according to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN, the Mavericks are open to exploring the trade markets for Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Klay Thompson and D’Angelo Russell.
Davis, Thompson and Gafford can be traded at any point. Meanwhile, Russell can’t be traded until December 15.
