Dallas Mavericks Name Mike Schmitz General Manager Under President Masai Ujiri

DHJ Quick Take: Scouting the New Architecture

  • The Talent Hunter: Mike Schmitz is arguably the premier talent scout of the digital era. By bringing him in from Portland, Masai Ujiri has secured an executive who has spent over a decade watching every relevant prospect on the planet. For a team building around Cooper Flagg, having Schmitz’s eye for “NBA fit” is a massive competitive advantage.
  • Global Synergy: The alignment between Ujiri’s Giants of Africa vision and Schmitz’s work with the Ugandan National Team cannot be overstated. Expect the Mavericks to immediately become the league’s most aggressive and sophisticated international scouting operation, mining for the next generation of global stars to pair with Flagg.
  • A Modern Trajectory: Schmitz’s path—from DraftExpress video breakdowns to ESPN analyst to Portland front office—represents the modernization of the scouting profession. He brings a film-heavy, data-informed discipline that provides a stark contrast to the previous regime’s approach.
  • The Ujiri Hierarchy: The roles are now clearly defined. Ujiri is the “architect” and face of the franchise’s vision, while Schmitz is the “engine” managing the daily scouting and roster mechanics. This structure mirrors the successful models in Toronto and Oklahoma City, prioritizing long-term stability over short-term “splash” moves.
  • Immediate Test: Schmitz doesn’t have the luxury of a slow onboarding. With the 2026 NBA Draft and free agency just weeks away, he must immediately leverage his scouting database to identify high-value “glue guys” and developmental prospects that fit the Flagg timeline.

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks named Mike Schmitz general manager on Friday, placing one of the NBA’s most respected draft evaluators in charge of day-to-day basketball operations under team president Masai Ujiri.

Schmitz arrives from the Portland Trail Blazers, where he spent four seasons as assistant general manager. He will report directly to Ujiri and oversee the strategic alignment of the franchise’s basketball operations department, including scouting, player personnel, roster construction, and long-term planning.

“Mike is one of the most respected evaluators and basketball minds in the NBA,” Ujiri said. “He brings intelligence, discipline, humility, and a relentless work ethic to everything he does. Just as importantly, he understands how to build an aligned, collaborative culture across every part of a basketball organization. We are building something special in Dallas, and Mike will be a major part of that vision.”

The hire reshapes the top of the Mavericks’ front office, which has been in transition since the franchise dismissed former general manager Nico Harrison. Ujiri now serves as Dallas’s top basketball decision-maker, and Schmitz becomes his first major front office hire with the team.

Ujiri’s organizational approach has been shaped by 12 years at the Toronto Raptors‘ front office, where he led the team to its first NBA championship in 2019 and built one of the league’s most respected international scouting infrastructures. He has consistently prioritized executives who emphasize talent evaluation, player development, and culture-first leadership.

Mike Schmitz Built a Reputation as an Elite Draft Evaluator

Schmitz fits that profile. He has spent more than a decade evaluating talent across the domestic and international basketball landscape, beginning at DraftExpress in 2012, where he built a reputation for deeply researched film breakdowns and prospect analysis.

When ESPN acquired DraftExpress in 2017, Schmitz moved to the network as a draft analyst, covering five NBA Drafts on national television while continuing to extensively scout international prospects.

He left ESPN in May 2022 to join the Trail Blazers, where he worked on player evaluation, scouting, roster strategy, and organizational planning. League executives view him as one of the most thorough talent evaluators of his generation, particularly in identifying prospects from non-traditional backgrounds and projecting their NBA fit.

“Joining the Dallas Mavericks is an incredible opportunity,” Schmitz said. “I have tremendous respect for Masai, this ownership group and the vision they have for the future of this franchise. I’m excited to get to work alongside the talented people already in place and help build a championship-caliber organization.”

International Experience Aligns With Masai Ujiri’s Global Vision

Schmitz’s international experience is expected to play a meaningful role in the Mavericks’ approach to roster construction. He has served as an assistant coach for the Ugandan national team since 2018, building relationships across the African basketball ecosystem.

That work aligns with Ujiri’s emphasis on global development, including his role as founder of Giants of Africa, a nonprofit that runs basketball camps and infrastructure programs across the continent.

The Mavericks’ front office overhaul follows two turbulent seasons. Dallas traded former star Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025, parted ways with Harrison, and won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery to select Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick.

Flagg was named NBA Rookie of the Year in April after a record-setting debut season that included a 51-point performance against the Orlando Magic.

Defined Roles at the Top of Basketball Operations

With Schmitz now in place, the Mavericks have a clear basketball operations hierarchy. Ujiri sets the broader vision and serves as the highest-ranking voice on personnel matters.

Schmitz manages the operational engine, including scouting, draft preparation, trade evaluation, and personnel decisions. Scouting infrastructure, particularly on the international side, is widely viewed as an area where Schmitz can immediately upgrade the organization’s pipeline.

Schmitz began his basketball career as a video coordinator for the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA G League during the 2012-13 season, the same year he graduated from the University of Arizona. His path from DraftExpress to ESPN to Portland to Dallas has tracked with the modernization of the NBA scouting profession, a trajectory few current executives have replicated.

The Mavericks open the 2026 offseason with the No. 1 pick of the 2025 draft already on the roster and a young core looking to build on Flagg’s Rookie of the Year campaign. Schmitz’s first major test arrives quickly, with the 2026 NBA Draft set for late June and free agency opening in July.
