As the Dallas Mavericks deal with injuries to Dereck Lively II (right ankle stress fracture), Maxi Kleber (right foot fracture), and Dwight Powell (right hip strain) all sidelined, the team signed 7-foot center Kylor Kelley to a two-way contract after waiving Jazian Gortman.
Kelley averaged 9.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting 63.5% from the field, garnering attention from multiple teams. However, the Mavericks secured his services. Kelley had several suitors, but Dallas was viewed as the best fit.
League sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com that Kelley, who impressed during his stint with the South Bay Lakers in the G League this season, will arrive in Dallas on Sunday and will be on the active roster as early as Monday to play against the Washington Wizards.
Daniel Gafford has been shouldering the bulk of the center responsibilities. Kelley provides the Mavericks with a necessary center option. Barring any further roster changes, Kelley is expected to remain on the NBA roster for much of the season.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd acknowledged the challenges of the Mavericks’ mounting center injuries after the team’s 122-107 loss against the Boston Celtics.
“It’s a hole. It’s tough,” Kidd commented. “I’ve never seen anything like it, and it’s not going to get any better. We’re definitely stretching [Gafford].”
Gafford, who has averaged 12.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks this season, has expressed readiness to tackle the increased demands.
“It’s definitely a heavy load to carry, especially with our recent injuries,” Gafford said. “But it’s about stepping up when the team needs you. I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help us navigate through these tough times.”
Kelley’s shot-blocking and paint-finishing, among other attributes, will be crucial as Dallas tries to remain competitive in a challenging season.
As the Mavericks prepare for their next game against the Washington Wizards, they hope Kelley’s addition will provide helpful center depth.
