Before Damian Lillard finalized a return to the Portland Trail Blazers in free agency, the Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly explored the possibility of signing the veteran NBA guard.
According to multiple reports, there was “definite mutual interest” between the two sides before Lillard ultimately chose a three-year, $42 million deal with Portland.
Darren Wolfson of KSTP-TV confirmed Minnesota’s involvement, with Wolfson noting on social media that “there was definite mutual interest between Dame and the Wolves.”
Lillard became a free agent after being waived by the Milwaukee Bucks in early July following a torn Achilles suffered in April. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for most or all of the 2025–26 season.
Timberwolves Explored Lillard Option Early in Free Agency
While it is unclear whether Minnesota made a formal contract offer, the team made exploratory contact with Lillard’s camp during the early stages of his free agency.
National NBA reporter Marc Spears previously listed the Timberwolves as one of several suitors for the 35-year-old guard, though Lillard ultimately chose a return to the franchise where he spent his first 11 NBA seasons.
Lillard’s decision to rejoin Portland included a player option for the 2027–28 season and a full no-trade clause.
Why Minnesota Made Sense
Minnesota’s interest was logical based on the current roster makeup. Veteran point guard Mike Conley, 37, is entering the final stage of his career, and rookie Rob Dillingham, one of the team’s first-round picks in recent years, is not expected to be a Day 1 starter.
Adding Lillard would have provided the Timberwolves with another elite scoring option alongside Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels, potentially elevating the team’s title contention status.
Despite the potential fit, Lillard’s longstanding ties to Portland — including family connections and an established legacy — made the Trail Blazers his clear preference.
What It Means Going Forward
Lillard’s return to Portland was reportedly finalized following multiple meetings with team leadership. While Minnesota missed out on Lillard, the reported interest may signal the Timberwolves’ continued desire to pursue a veteran backcourt addition ahead of the 2025–26 season.
